Fridays Letters - Dear Concrete Floor

It's Friday which means it's time for this weeks Friday's Letters, once again a big thanks to Ashley at Adventures of Newlyweds for being the hostess with the mostess and putting on this fab party for us each week

I'm imagining I'm writing this weeks letters from this calm and cheerful home office with a funky spiral bound notebook and hot cup of lemon and honey tea!

Dear Concrete Floor - You were poured in the garage this week and I am so damn excited I did a happy dance under the stars outside and toasted a glass of wine with Mr P that this garage extension is almost finished.

Dear Workmen - Please wipe your feet before treading sand and mud and dirt onto my newly mopped floorboards. Yes I did just clean them. Yes I now have to clean them again. Grrrrr.

Dear Colour Masterclass - I'm so glad I went last night I really learnt a lot and am inspired to do some decorating this weekend. Thanks to Real Living for hosting there is a reason you are my favourite magazine!

Dear New Buss Route - I'm leaving home 5 minutes earlier but getting into work 30 minutes earlier - no idea how that works but I'm glad I was adventurous enough to try a different route. Why do we live somewhere for so long but are too frightened to go a different way for a change?!

Dear Fashionista Followers - Don't forget to enter my first giveaway closing at midnight tonight (Aussie time UTC/GMT +8 hours) and good luck!

Picking Out The Garage Doors

Now here's a first - the first place we checked out for Garage Doors and we decided there was no need to get quotes from anywhere else we'll go with these guys Gryphon Garage Doors. They make the garage doors themselves locally and it's always best to deal direct you get a better deal and a quicker turner over because you're not dealing with any middle man.

So as soon as the slab was poured, the very next day in fact we called Gryphon to come out and measure up and picked out our doors

We are going for the cedar wood look in jarrah (of course!)

You can pick thin or wide panels (not suitable if you want windows)

Or this Ranch style with squares (suitable with windows)

I wanted window panels to let in a bit of natural light
Here are some of the different window styles

And this is the style of door we picked
A Sectional Cedar Look Door in Jarrah Ranch style

With Sunrise Windows I liked this pattern as there are only 4 panels it looked less busy

We also got a single roller door for the back of the garage that goes into the backyard
The colour we picked is classic cream (top left sample)
so it blends with the house bricks

The door style is a metal roller door and will look similar to this door
except it won't have the key lock on the front as it is electric as well

Buying the 2 doors together we made a bit of a saving which is why we splurged on the electric roller door as well, it was an extra $200 but at the end of the day it will be much easier to buzz open the door with a remote than to have to find the key and heave the door up.

Hopefully the doors will be installed in the next 2-3 weeks and we can set up our garage, park the cars in, and have a garage party!

Sharing with this weeks Linky Parties 52 Mantels and Savvy Southern Style

Masterchef Recipe: Beef Stroganoff and Parsley Fettuccini

Beef stroganoff is such a yummy winter comfort food and I've made it a few times with this recipe I got from the Masterchef 2010 TV show - here’s the link to the recipe including how to make the fettuccini.

In my variation I don't make the pasta as they do (but a pasta machine is on my wish list!) it is a good mid week meal as takes less than an hour to get on the table. I know it sounds like a lot of brandy but this really adds to the flavour and the paprika gives it a rich red colour - trust me it’s delicious!

Beef Stroganoff and Parsley Fettuccini
(Serves 2)

2 tbs sweet paprika
100g flour
500g beef eye fillet sliced into strips
¼ cup olive oil
40g butter, plus extra to serve
200g Swiss brown mushrooms, thinly sliced
3 eschalots, finely diced
2 tbs tomato paste
½ cup brandy
1 cup beef stock
2 tbs Worcestershire sauce
2-3 tbs sour cream
2 tbs parsley, finely chopped
Fettuccini pasta (I use a packet of fettuccini egg nests)

Combine paprika, flour and 1 teaspoon of sea salt in a sandwich bag and toss beef in the mixture to coat.

Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large frying pan over high heat and sear the beef for 1-2 minutes or until browned. Remove and set aside.

Reduce heat to medium-high; add half the butter and remaining the olive oil. Cook the mushrooms until caramelised. Reduce the heat to medium, add remaining butter, eschalots and cook for a few minutes until softened.

Add the tomato paste, brandy, stock, Worcestershire sauce and bring to the boil.

At this stage put a large pot of salted water on to boil, add pasta and cook until ala dente.

Once your stroganoff is thick and the brandy taste has disappeared reduce heat to medium, stir in sour cream, reserved beef and juices, and season with salt and freshly cracked pepper.

Drain pasta and stir through the fresh parsley.

Serve in a bowl with parsley fettuccini and topped with beef stroganoff.

Delicious!

Do you make recipes you have seen on the TV?

How Could That Get Me Excited?!

The concrete floor was poured yesterday in the new garage and I'm so giddy with excitement I can barely type. Who would’ve thought a chunk of concrete could make me all happy inside but I guess I don't have kids so renovating is my baby it gives me these warm and fuzzy moments!

So the floor is poured which means we have wallsroof - tilesrender - ceiling - floor Yep it’s an actual garage now people!

Mr P and I went out there last night with our glasses of wine and stood and admired that concrete slab with big smiles on our faces

We’ve worked on it every weekend since Easter that's 3 months of organising tradesman, buying materials, and getting it built. It's not finished yet but I can definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel now ... we have jumped over a huge milestone I can tell you!

Garage progress photos will follow soon .... stay tuned!

The School of Real Living

I've just enrolled myself in The School of Real Living Colour Masterclass coming to Perth next week.

I've seen these classes advertise in the magazine before and kept thinking they'll never come to Perth (sad face) and what do you know they organised a Perth date so there's no excuse, I'm signed up and ready to go. There may be some spaces left if you're quick you can register here.

The class is presented by the International School of Colour and Design and they'll show us how to create a colour pallete and make a moodboard of a room we want to decorate.

Even though I've worked out the paint colours for the house I still feel I'm lacking confidence in how to add some wow factor so hopefully I can take home some ideas from this to make some bright colourful changes at home.

Now I need to decide which room needs the most help with colour - the rooms left to paint are the Kitchen, Dining area, Laundry and Powder Room/Toilet

What room would you pick?

Real Living is by far my favourite home design magazine (as you can see from past posts herehere, here and here) and I've been subscribed for about 3 years now and it's worth every cent I absolutely love the ideas and inspiration it gives me.

Can't wait to see what the masterclass brings
