Photo A Day: October Days 10 - 18

I'm back with my second round of October's Photo A Day challenge which I'm joining in with Fat Mum Slim. I admit there were some tricky ones especially as I continued to play on my trip to Sydney last week but I only had to dig a few photos from the archives which was a pretty good effort I think.

You can see my first 1-9 days of photos over here.

These are Days 10 - 18 of photos from the prompts above ...

10 Mr Ps hardworking hands; 11 My magazine stash; 12 Looking below at painted nails;
13 Lexi's always watching me; 14 My new kitchen bench; 15 Shopping at Victoria Secret;
16 Leafy trees; 17 What side of my king size bed to sleep on ; 18 Still waters of Swan River;

It's funny how my eyes are peeled now when I'm heading out and about or even at home. I also like the way others interpret the word for the day there are so many clever cookies out there.

Sydney: A Few Snaps and Stories

I'm back from my short trip to Sydney where I went for a work conference this week.

I was back in the office today and back into work mode which was a bit of a struggle because although it's only interstate the 5 hour flight home last night and 3 hour time difference does take it out of me!

This is my third year attending the conference and I feel this is the best one yet, I've come away learning heaps and my brain is filled to the brim with information and ideas to put into action.

The conference venue was at The Powerhouse Museum which had some great exhibits on Australian Designers and The Beatles in Australia which we could check out for free (on the breaks of course!)

At the function dinner there was a special guest speaker Malcolm Page who is an Australian sailor and shared his story about Olympic success and I got to feel the weight of his medals in my hands that he won in the Beijing and London games.

I stayed at the Novotel Rockford in Darling Harbour and after getting the airport shuttle bus to the wrong hotel (there are 3 Novotels in Darling Harbour so confusing and embarrassing!) I finally managed to find the right one where a big king bed was waiting for me.

There's nothing like having a nice relaxing bubble bath and ordering room service at any time of the day or night for comfort away from home!

I stayed near Paddy's Markets and managed a quick look around at the market stalls and did a bit of early Christmas shopping which I'm sure they'll love when they find out I bought their gifts in Sydney.

Unfortunately I didn't get time to get out of the City and visit any of the homewares stores on my list.

But I'm back in Sydney next month for my family cruise holiday so I might have more time then. The only other shopping I did was at the airport ... that's a bit sad isn't it!

Staying in Darling Harbour is always a buzz with people watching and things to see and do.

A trip to Sydney is not complete without a walk around Circular Quay with the Opera House and views of the Harbour Bridge.

The weather was perfectly sunny and warm and a nice change from the rain and cooler days we've been having in Perth.

Spring is such a great time to travel.

I will be back next month Sydney .... stay sunny until then!

How was your week? What have you been up to?

Photo A Day: October Days 1 - 9

I'm in Sydney for most of next week and so I'm wishing all my amazing readers a fantastic week ahead and I'll be back on the blog soon! I still have some kitchen renovation posts to share with lots of juicy before and afters. Also the Courtyard project is booked in so looking forward to sharing updates on the front of the house design in the coming weeks too.

Until then you can keep in touch with me on my Facebook page or find me on Twitter.

This month I'm partaking in my very first Photo A Day October challenge with Fat Mum Slim over here on my Facebook page. I was so nervous about joining in as I'm certainly not known for my photography skills but I am really enjoying it so far and haven't had any trouble playing along every day ... I don't know what I was so worried about!

These are my first 9 days of photos from the prompts ...

9 Pink pineapple cushion; 8 DIY Dirty Dancing quote; 7 Pathway to my buns of steel;
6 Weber roast dinner cooking; 5 Getting ready for a Hens Party; 4 Water feature in Forrest Chase;
3 Me at a karaoke work do; 2 Light in London Court; 1 Cushions on guest bed

This photo challenge has really inspired me to keep me eyes out and look at what's around me. I have even downloaded my first photo editing app so I could create the collage above, it's about time I got a bit more tech savvy and creative!

Sydney: Must Shop Homewares Stores

I usually make the trip from Perth to Sydney about twice a year, I'm heading there next week for a work conference and then again a month later for my family cruise holiday.

Sydney really is the busy vibrant side of Australia, whilst the harbour and city areas cater for tourists and people from all over the globe, it's also a modern city that Sydney people love to live and work in the heart of it all. Sydney's shops and fashion are always on trend and there is far more variety than what we have in Perth - like Topshop and in 2014 H&M is rumoured to be opening.

When it comes to house and home style stores, I find that Sydney stores seem more up to date and carry a variety of products that aren't always found in Perth. Here are my top 5 homewares stores I'd love to check out.

1. Pure and General - for unique and electric homewares

2. Scout House - With original products to suit different styles

3. Blueprint - Bright and sparkly gifts and homewares

4. Papaya  - Beautiful homewares and gifts

5. Jade and Jasmine - One off upcycled pieces

That is my short list so far but I'm sure there are some more must see shops to check out.

Are you a Sydney sider?
Do you know of any homewares stores I should add to my list?
I'd love to hear about them!

Restoring The Floorboards - Before and After

I've given a tutorial on restoring the floorboards in the house before but the kitchen/dining room floorboard restoration was a bit different because there was a lot more work involved in this room and the floors had to be a gradual process that happened over time in working with the rest of the renovation.

The floors weren't just filled, sanded and sealed, it was also our first time at having to patch holes in the floorboards from when we removed the pantry wall and window.

And the end result?
They came up a million bucks!

So to start in the kitchen/dining room we spent about 6 hours filling the gaps between each and every floorboard with filler.

This is so it's easier to sweep and keep clean and no draughts or breeze come up through the floorboards.

Then any nails or rough bits are smoothed off so they don't damage the sanding paper.

The holes in the floorboards were patched - we repaired the hole left by the brick pantry wall being removed with spare pantry shelves, ironically made from the jarrah floorboards themselves, how lucky a find is that!

The boards around the new door way also had to be patched and skirting installed.

Again we managed to be thrifty here and reuse some jarrah from one of the wardrobes we ripped out.

The boards were sanded back bare which took about 4 hours before the new kitchen was installed.

We use Feast Watson Tung Oil on all the floorboards. We applied oil around the edge of the room where we had marked out where the kitchen cabinets would go so the floorboards would be sealed underneath the cabinets. We knew there was no point in sealing the entire floor now because it was going to get scratched up and marked with all the demolition, installation and plumbing work to be done in this room.

Sure enough, once the new kitchen was in place, the plumbing and electrics in, painting was done, and there wasn't going to be anymore work in the kitchen/dining room THEN we did a final sand back of the floors to remove any scratches and marks on the wood. All the sanding is done with an electric hand held sander and took about 3 hours to re-sand properly.

Once it's been sanded the floor needs to be cleaned of every single little spec of dust, wood chips, etc because otherwise they will get sealed into the boards when the oil goes on and be a constant reminder that you didn't clean them properly! The best thing to clean them with is methylated spirits and a clean rag it cleans up much better than anything else we've tried (and this is the 7th room we've restored the boards in so have had some practice).

Once it's clean and dry out comes the paint brush and tin of Tung Oil and all the edges of the room are painted carefully with the oil.

Next is the wool applicator mop and the oil is rolled on to the rest of the boards.

Then all the doors are shut and the room is out of bounds for 24 - 48 hours to ensure that the oil sets before standing on it.

The next morning coming out into the kitchen it was like Christmas ... looking at those beautiful shiny floors my face light up like a Christmas tree!

C'mon don't they look magical?

And then the Grinch came and stole my Christmas spirit away .... there were a few dry patches that the oil sucked right into the old boards and left some patches.

Being the perfectionists that we are we had to sand all the oil off again in the entire room, clean it, then oil it again.

You need to lightly sand between coats otherwise the floors look grainy and we want them as smooth as a baby's bum.

So out came the electric sander again, and the floors were given a light sand this time it took only 40 minutes.

Then the floors were cleaned with methylated spirits again.

The edges painted in and the mop doing the rest of the job with the oil.

Again, the room is left for 24 - 48 hours .... and yes this time the floors coated evenly and there were no dry patches, they looked amazing.

So amazing in fact that someone thought they might walk across the kitchen ... touching the floors they felt dry but on walking across to the other side they were still a bit wet and sticky and you guessed it ... there were about 5 foot prints made by a certain Mr P.

After laughing until we almost cried (what else do you do?!) the next day the floorboards were sanded back FOR A THIRD TIME except we couldn't bare wasting all that oil again and we just sanded back the footprints and patched those areas.

You can't really tell and I was just glad to be finished as you can imagine!

The kitchen floor was out of bounds for about 2 days until we were sure they were absolutely set and dry to walk on.

This meant to get to the laundry/toilet or outside to Lexi we had to go out our front door and through the garage ... oh yes that made for some interesting nights running out the front door in my nightie to do a midnight toilet run.

The things you do when you're renovating!

It's a little bittersweet this is our last room of floorboards to restore - we have now done all 4 bedrooms, the living room, hallway and now the kitchen and dining area.

Now we get to live with these stunning originally restored 50+ year old jarrah floorboards and it sure does make all the work worthwhile.

Recipe: Mum's Party Sausage Rolls

I finally got my hands on my Mum's famous party sausage rolls recipe and I've made these tasty little morsels twice now and they are always a crowd pleaser.

Honestly, there is no substitute for handmade sausage rolls Vs frozen store bought sausage rolls - the flavour in homemade is way better and cost about $7 to make 4 dozen which is really good value too.

Sure, they look a little rustic but that's what homemade cooking is all about!

Mum's Party Sausage Rolls
Makes 4 dozen

Ingredients
500g sausage mince
1 carrot, grated
1 brown onion, chopped
2 tbs tomato sauce
2 tbs worcester sauce
3 slices white bread, crusts cut off, diced
1-2 tbs mixed herbs
1 tbs garlic steak spice
Salt and Pepper
4 sheets frozen puff pastry, just thawed
1 egg, whisked
Extra mixed herbs or sesame seeds for garnish

Method

Get all your ingredients out so you are ready to rock and (sausage) roll

Add all the ingredients into a large bowl

Get your clean hands in and mix together until you have a nice consistency

Cut each pastry sheet in half and spoon mince down middle of pastry

Brush edge of pastry with egg wash and roll up to seal

Brush top with egg wash and sprinkle on sesame seeds or mixed herbs
Use a sharp knife to cut pastry into 6 even pieces

Cover a baking tray in baking paper and place sausage rolls on top
Repeat with remaining pastry and mince mix until all used up

Once your trays are ready put in a preheated oven on 200 degrees and bake for 20 minutes

Once the pastry is brown and crispy they are ready to take out and
serve on a platter with dipping sauces

These sausage rolls can be made ahead of time and frozen and then put into the oven on 180 degrees to reheat for 20 minutes until they are hot and ready to eat.

Make these tasty sausage rolls for your next party you won't be disappointed!

Christmas Is Coming!

On my mini break I got stuck in and cleared out my craft room/study which had become a bit of a dumping ground when the kitchen/dining room was being renovated and now that project is finished the room really needed a good clean up.

I organised my wrapping station sorting out all my ribbons and papers so I can wrap presents all pretty without getting into a fight with the scissors and tangled string. I then got inspired to start writing my Christmas list ...

Yes I'm one of those annoyingly organised people who has already started Christmas shopping. I don't go out on a specific Christmas shopping mission, that always stresses me out and I end up spending more and not really getting what I want.

When I'm out and about I've always got my eye out for things that would make nice presents for my friends and family. If you are out shopping and you see something that you think would make a great gift for a friend then you must buy it there and then because you know you'll either not remember what it was you were going to get them or you won't be able to find it again. Trust me, I do it even now but I'm being ruthless from now on when I see something that screams their name - I'll buy it for them and put it away until their Birthday or Christmas.

I keep all the gifts in the spare wardrobe in the guest bedroom and if I've forgotten a Birthday or need an impromptu gift I know I've always got a pretty good stash to shop from at home.

This year I want to have the majority of my shopping done by 1 December. I can't promise they'll be wrapped all pretty ready to go under the tree by then, but I definitely want to be organised and all shopped out so that I can focus on hosting Christmas Day lunch .... YES Mr P and I are hosting our very first Christmas Day Lunch and I'm so freaking excited I've been pinning decorating ideas for months!

Have you started your Christmas shopping?
