Kitchen Splash Back - Tiles Vs Glass

I've shared with you the kitchen materials we've chosen so far - the white kitchen cupboards and black granite bench top and the contrasting black kick boards.

Now the next big question is for the splash back and whether to go with:

Tiled splash back which will give us a bigger variety to chose from
Vs
Glass splash back which will look sleek and modern

A tile splash back will give us a lot more variety of the size of tile, pattern and colours.

I'm drawn to the small rectangle tiles in a mixture of colours in the same tone.

The only downside I'm seeing to tiles is that the grout can get dirty and may be a pain to keep clean.

A glass splash back looks modern and the reflection will bounce light around making the room appear brighter and bigger.

The downside to the glass is that it is limited in the pattern/textured options. I would probably need to settle for a plain stained glass if I went with the glass splash back.

I think the splash back can add a real wow factor to the kitchen.

Mr P has put the pressure on my design skills saying if I want to be an interior designer this is my moment to shine - I really want to get this right and make the right decision but hey no pressure!

What splash back to you have in your kitchen - Tiles or Glass?

I'd love to know what you think of yours!

  1. We have tiles and as much as I wanted and would have loved a glass splashback, after seeing a friends and how quickly it gets dirty [plus after someone dropped something and it bounced on the kitchen top and hit the glass, the glass chipped = exxy to replace!] I was glad we went with tiles.

IF we ever get around to redoing our kitchen, I'd replace the tiles with subway tiles - I LOVE them and how they look and I'd do them in a host of bright colours - think Mexican inspired kitchen. I love bold bright colours, I'm not a neutral girl!

What's the price difference between the two choices?

    1. 1 vote to tiles then! The Mexican colours do sound pretty fun. To be honest I havent priced them up yet I figured they would probably cost about the same.

  2. Michelle I agree with Stinkbomb! My fiance's parents have a glass splashback and yes it looks sexy but requires just as much cleaning as tiles - maybe even more because the tiniest little splash leaves a mark. It's also a really expensive option. If I was redoing my kitchen I think I would go with subway tiles (gorgeous and classic), I love them! And I think tiles let you give a bit more personality to a space. But you have the eye and I think whatever you choose will look lovely. Good luck! xx

  3. I chose plain white subway tiles and LOVE them. Personally I would choose tiles over a glass splashback again if I were to do another kitchen (but who knows what the next kitchen trend will be!). Anything you install will require cleaning, so go with what you feel works best with the style of your kitchen and your personal style ;)

  4. I vote for glass. I detest grout and cleaning grout and dirty grout and grout. Ugh, grout! I even hate the word! I would rather clean over a smooth surface than fight with grout. ;)

  5. I have a tile splash back, no patterns or anything - we went for the same plain white tiles throughout and I love it. I think it's more timeless and won't look dated.

  7. I don't think splashback is even in my vocabulary.
Ours are tiles. But our house is coming up to 20 years old. So we aren't overly modern. Best wishes showing your "shining moment" as you continue to display your interior designing flair!!
Looking forward to seeing what you decided.

I found glass easier to clean but it showed every mark, our tiles hide a lot (awesome!) but are harder to clean.

We have tiles but I would get coloured glass for the wow factor, but it might need cleaned a lot more? But I suppose not if it's in a darker colour! Emily - visiting via TUST for Blogs and PR

  12. If I had a choice I would go with a happy feel - some sort of colour whether you go glass or tiles. I love the orange glass one above. I always wanted blue tiles is different sizes and shades.

  13. We have a red glass splashback in our kitchen and I do love it, quite groovy and easy to clean - BUT! I love those pictures you have of tiles. LOVE THEM. I am a slatternly housekeeper though so they would be FOUL and greasy in my house. Still...I do love them. *sigh*

  14. I really think glass tiles would be absolutely great. Installing glass tile backsplash is awesome! This takes so much time and money but I think if this is done with perfection, great satisfaction would be the ultimate result. I love this idea of having glass tiles for backsplash! So perfect!

  15. My kitchen tile is 21 years old, but as crisp white subway tiles they look as good today as the day we got them. I know you can get better grout protection that you add (in a color like white too) into the grouting process & it makes cleaning easier. Having said all that, I believe you should go with what will make you smile every time you walk into your kitchen. In my case, as on trend & always in style as the white subway tiles are, I will go glass with my next kitchen as I like the idea of a streamlined no grout look. I personally would go a safer pale colour like white or greeny glass colour, adding color with accessories, but you must follow your heart & go with what makes it sing. If it means a little more on a glass red splash back, do it! Imagine how annoying it would be to walk in to your kitchen every day regretting that you settled. Go with what you LOVE, especially if you aren't considering selling any time soon.

    1. I definately want to do something that makes me smile that is why Im renovating in the first place to turn this house into something that is mine with my own stamp in it :) You are right adding colour with accessories is a safe way to ensure it wont date too fast either. Thanks so much for your advice x

  17. I have white tiles behind my stove and around two of the three walls for my splashback .. the splashback behind the sink is black tiles.
I really do not like the tiles behind my cooker/stove .. hopefully when I do the under bench oven and bench plates it might be a tad better .. but they are sooooo hard to clean!!
