100 Happy Days Challenge

I have decided to kick of the month of May by taking part in the 100 Happy Days challenge .... starting tomorrow!

The idea behind 100 Happy Days is to photograph something that makes you happy each day over 100 days and share your happy moment across your social media of choice or you can do it privately by emailing 100 Happy Days.

I've decided to share my 100 Happy Days on my Instagram my favourite go to place for photo inspiration.

Here are some of the reasons from the 100 Happy Days website of why you should join in and sign up for the challenge:

I know I'm guilty myself when I have bad day or feeling stressed out or just plain blah that I can focus on the negatives instead of the positives. But there's a bucket load of things that make me happy each day because let's face it - happiness is a choice, it's a way of life if you want it to be, seeing the glass half full and being positive and optimistic.

I'm ready to start acknowledge my 100 days of happy so I can look back when I'm having a day from hell and really appreciate all the little things and happy moments in life  .... catching up with a friend, laughing so much I can't stop, that first sip of wine after a hard days work, curled up on the couch with my love Mr P, my fur baby Lexi looking at me with her puppy dog eyes, sushi on my lunch break, buying a new dress ..... when I stop and think about it so many things make me happy!

See the challenge is working already!

I'll admit I'm a bit daunted about taking 100 photos over 100 days for this challenge and hope that I can stick to it every day. I'm talking 1 May to 8 August ... not that I'm counting .... Phew I can do this!

Are you doing the 100 Happy Days Challenge?

You can start any time - Just head on over here to register

You can find me on Instagram here using the hashtag #100HappyDays

Laundry Renovation - Wood Look Bench Top

We have been picking out the materials and supplies for the Laundry/Powder Room renovation and I'm excited to say have found the bench top for the laundry.

This is the wall the bench top will go along from the wall to the door frame with cabinets underneath and overhead.

I had my heart set on a butcher block style bench top which would compliment the jarrah floorboards running throughout the house (but not in the laundry which is tiled) and because it is a much cheaper option than the granite bench tops we picked for the kitchen and bathroom.

We checked out the range of bench tops at Ikea but they were too light in colour and we wanted something closer to our jarrah wood look. This is Ikea's Lagan $160 wood bench top.

There are laminate choices as well but personally I'm not a huge fan of laminate because you can tell it's not real wood and I wanted something more authentic. This is Ikea's Pragel $125 laminate bench top.

We ended up finding an authentic wooden bench top at Bunnings from the Interbuild range for a very reasonable $99. They are hardwood panels made from finger jointed lamellas glued together and finished with a hard wax oil suitable for wet environments.

It's important to ensure the materials used in any wet area are suitable, can you imagine doing all that work and spending a heap of money only to have the cupboards warp and bench top bow. No thank you!

There were 3 wood colours to choose from and we fell for the Karri as it has the same red tones of wood that our Jarrah floorboards have.

We went through each bench top and yes I made Mr P shuffle them all along until we found the perfect one with the right amount of knots and character. They are heavy too, weighing over 20kgs each!

The one we picked out had a beautiful pattern with the wood joinery and even had a heart shaped knot (well kind of) it was meant to be!

I love the redness and depth of the Karri wood and think it will look amazing and really pop against the white cabinetry and splash back tiles.

We will cut the bench top to size, cut the sink hole out, and the leftover wood can be used to make something - maybe a chopping board or tray.

I'm so happy we found the bench top that's another thing ticked off the shopping list!

What do you think of using butcher block as a laundry bench top?

Book Review and Preview: Breathing Room by Dr Melva Green and Lauren Rosenfeld

This is a book review and preview of the book Breathing Room by Dr Melva Green and Lauren Rosenfeld that was published on 1 April 2014.

This book is written by Dr Green otherwise known for her role as an expert Doctor on TV show Hoarders and Lauren Rosenfeld who is a professional soul declutterer and self proclaimed hippie dreamer. Together this duo show you how to declutter your heart and declutter your home.

This is a home related book that I couldn't wait to curl up on the couch with and see if I could declutter my home. My first instinct was to look for pretty pictures and interior design inspiration but this was not that kind of book. It seemed I had to reach much deeper than that and look both on the spiritual and practical side.

This book talks about how we declutter our homes of paperwork and stuff in the same way we should declutter our minds and our hearts to let more joyful things in. It made me realise that its not just about clearing the stuff at home but also the stuff inside of me that are unwanted things.

The first part of the book is about the rooms in your home and going through them. Then the second part of the book is about clearing the energy and how you can do that - letting go and saying no to clutter. The concept is simple - if it's weighing you down, if it's become an obstacle, if you can't find the things you love, then it's time to let it go and find a little breathing room.

This book is spiritually thought provoking but it is also action oriented. The spiritual method is called SLICE an anagram for Stop and Listen. Intend. Clear the Energy.

This book was quite easy to follow but you had to be in the mood to concentrate it wasn't just a nice fairy land story you could get lost in. You had to read and think and self reflect all the way through. I found it to be quite hard work to read through in one sitting and actually had this book on the go for about 3 months before I finished it. This is not a read once kind of book and I know I'll use it as a reference book for many years to come.

I recommend this book to home lovers who want to see a different side of your home and yourself and who need a helping hand to clear your clutter at home and within yourself.

I give this book 4 stars

Jarrah Jungle's Star Rating:

1 Bad - I'd rather eat brussel sprouts topped with anchovies than read this again
2 Not Good - I'd rather watch re-runs of Neighbours than read this again
3 Ok - I'm sitting on the fence - its not great but not terrible either
4 Good - I'd pass up a pack of tim tams for this read
5 Great - I'd pass up a date with Johnny Depp for this read

Picking Out Our Internal Doors and New Front Door

Something that has been on our To Do List since we moved in is to replace or fix up all the doors throughout the house.

This is because the original doors are 40+ years old and have knocks and bumps in them that no amount of paint can hide.

Our old doors showing their age
The handles will also be replaced because they're rickety and feel like they are going to come off in your hand when you pull them! I also want the bathroom, powder room and master bedroom to have locks on the doors for privacy.

The quaint old door handles

We had the same problem with our hallway cupboard doors looking really old and worn but as they are a custom size and it would've been way to expensive to replace the doors so a cheap fix was to wallpaper the doors and replace the handles.

I love how they came up, they look really unique and you would never know the state of the doors underneath!
Our hallway cupboard doors we wallpapered and added new handles

We might end up wallpapering the door from the laundry to the garage as well because it's a custom size and will be quite expensive to replace. As you can see the wall and door frame took a beating when we ripped out the carport and built a garage extension.

I have the idea of wallpapering the door and entire wall so the door blends into the wall .... I already have some wallpaper samples up!

The shoppers entry - door from the garage into the laundry

All the rest of our internal doors are a standard size and can be replaced with new doors.

Our first attempt at hanging a door was in the bathroom after the bathroom renovation but we accidentally hung it upside down, not realising the wider panel should be on the bottom as it's a kick panel. Ooops! Rome wasn't built in a day and neither is our Jarrah Jungle!!

Since hanging that door we have changed our mind on this style of door with the 4 square pattern which was a Corinthian - Stanford. We only picked it because it matched our front door, but we are changing our front door because it got damaged and weathered with all the home improvement work out the front - the render and new driveway and path to the front door being laid.

See everything happens for a reason doesn't it!
Our old front door .... weathered and worn from the front of the house improvements
The new front door we picked up second hand for a bargain price when we were looking for our french doors. It retails for $1400 and we paid $200.

It needs to be sealed to bring out the wood grain and we have the handle and lock for it, then it's ready to hang. We might try to hang this ourselves although external doors are a bit tricky to get perfect so otherwise we'll get the door installer who hung the french doors for us to help.
Our sexy new front door
All the internal doors we are going to hang ourselves. When I say us of course I mean Mr P .... while I give encouraging words and make sandwiches and pour refreshing drinks!

These are the internal doors we have chosen. They are a Corinthian - Rockport brand and sell for $53 from Bunnings and Masters but we managed to get a discount of $6 per door and got them for $47 each.

Our new internal doors
The doors have a smooth skin with no wood grain and the rectangle pattern kind of mimics the floorboards throughout the house. They have character but aren't too modern and out of place for our 1960s home.

Up close pattern details

We will also put on new door handles but we haven't picked them out yet. The more types and choices there are the harder it is to pick one!

All the doors will need a few coats of paint as well, which is a job I can help with in between my sandwich queen duties of course!

The house is going to look a million bucks once the new doors are hung, they will really improve the look of the place not to mention be so much nicer to open and close without the fear of the handle ending up in my hand!
I will write a separate DIY post on hanging the doors .... up the right way this time!

Do you have any hints and tips for hanging a door?

Easter Break Projects - On The To Do List

The Easter break is just around the corner and Mr P and I have taken some extra days off work to have a nice long 10 day break.

Hopefully there's enough time to overdose on chocolate eggs and hot cross buns, catch up with friends and family and tackle some of the home improvement projects on the to do list.

This is our Easter break project to do list ....

Hang New Internal Doors - We want to replace all the internal doors in the house - the bedrooms, bathroom, toilet, hallway, etc.

We have picked out our doors and need to plane each back to fit. We will install brand new handles and hinges, give them a few coats of paint and hang them all shiny and new.

The house will look a million bucks when all the old rickety doors are replaced with these new sleek ones. Not to mention a lockable door on the bathroom .... my house guests will be happy about that!

A before post of our rickety old internal doors is still to come!

Install Courtyard Slats - We have decided on the metal Vs wood slat infills for our courtyard, we are going with maintenance free metal. After getting samples from 2 companies we have picked a colour that matches our garage door the best, we placed an order for the DIY slats and a gate and hopefully they're delivered by the end of the week.

We have bought a mitre saw to do the job (instead of paying a tradesman) and need to cut and install slats between each of the limestone pillars of the courtyard. We will also hang a new gate and install a mail box.

As soon as the Courtyard is enclosed, private and secure we can start landscaping and furnishing it. I am absolutely overflowing with ideas from gardening books and magazines for this!

The Courtyard in need of some fence slat infills

Laundry/Powder Room Renovation - We want to get the last of the supplies and materials for our Laundry/Powder Room so we can start the demo, get the jack hammer out and renovate this room.

We have a pretty good idea of what we want we just need to make some final decisions and go out and buy everything - toilet, laundry trough, bench top, flat pack cabinets, handles, powder room vanity and basin, taps, etc.

I can't wait to get started on this, it's the last room inside the house to be renovated and to have a toilet that will actually flush! Oh what a treat!!

My Laundry Mood Board

We are determined to get all 3 of the above started over the Easter break .... even if they don't get finished to make some progress would be great.

What's on your Easter break to do list?

Book Review and Preview: The All You Can Dream Buffet by Barbara O'Neal

This is a book review and preview of the book The All You Can Dream Buffet by Barbara O'Neal that was recently published in March 2014.

This is the second book I've read by American author Barbara O'Neal, the other was The Lost Recipe For Happiness that you can find my review for here.  Barbara is one busy novelist and has written more than 40 books!

This is the story about 4 women bloggers who form friendships online through their food blogs and travel miles to meet up and stay at one of the women's home, on a lavender farm in Oregon.

The first half of the story is about each of the women travelling to their destinations, the life they came from and the life they want to live. The second half is of their time on the farm, with each of them dealing with their own life dramas, hopes and dreams.

I really enjoyed how this book was written from the 4 very different characters points of view. Each woman was so vastly different in age and background, but their love of writing and blogging bring them together. I warmed to all of the characters and really felt for them on their journeys.

I've never read a book about blogs before and the references to taking photographs, writing posts and checking comments I really liked because I could relate to it so much being a blogger myself. That was my favourite part of the story, when they were blogging and sharing snapshots of their posts and recipes.

I recommend this book to any bloggers out there I think you will really relate and appreciate the friendships formed from blogging and how strangers can come together with a common and passionate interest - in this case it was food and blogging!

I give this book 4 stars

Hanging Pots And Plants

I really want to add some more plants and greenery to our patio and outdoor area to bring it to life.

When we added a new addition our rescue dog Lexi to our home just over a year ago, Lexi decided that every plastic pot under the patio was her chew toy and day after day another plant and pot was chewed and played with until there were none left.

So what pots are safe in the Jarrah Jungle patio area?

Well, these hanging pots and plants I picked up just before Christmas when doing some patio pimping have lasted well over the hot summer months and best of all Lexi can't reach them to destroy them!

I think succulents in hanging pots are my best bet if I want some greenery around. The thing I love about succulents is they don't need a lot of water and are pretty tough and hardy so survive well in small pots.

http://jarrahjungle.blogspot.com.au/2013/12/backyard-makeover-with-some-patio.html
The lonely survivers ... hardy succulents hanging high out of harms way

I have seen a lot of different styles of hanging pots lately, especially the fabric pot holders which are a bit of a flashback from the 70s but with their bright colours are now on trend.

Here are some really great hanging planters I have pinned lately ....

What are your favourite plants for hanging pots?

Laundry Renovation - Flat packs Vs Cabinet maker

For the cabinets in our previous renovation projects the bathroom and kitchen we had a cabinet maker help us design, custom make and install the cabinets for our bathroom vanity and kitchen cabinets.

The main reason was because space and storage were our number one priorities for these rooms, followed by wanting a real wow factor and professional finish.

For the bathroom, we couldn't find a vanity in the exact measurements we needed and to buy a stock standard vanity would mean losing out on precious storage space.

The same goes for the kitchen on an even larger scale - so we had custom made cupboards to fit every nook and cranny of our small kitchen to get the most storage as we possibly could squeeze out of the room.

The cupboards were made off site and assembled and then bought to my house all put together and ready to install by the handy man. Even then they were there for a few days and had to make minor adjustments along the way because in a 1960s house nothing is square, especially the walls, so to not have to deal with the headache of installing banks of kitchen cabinets perfectly was a great job for us to outsource!

Our kitchen cabinetry - oven side

Sure, it is more expensive to get a cabinet maker, but paying someone else to make and install the cabinets meant that our time was free to do other renovation work like the demolition, preparation of the roomsshopping for all the bits and pieces, painting and finishing off the project.

There is so much to do when you are renovating that the cabinetry is just one part of it - although a very important part it is.

Kitchen design

It also means you are getting a professionals input into the design and layout of the room and the cabinetry that will work best in the space.

These guys do this day in and day out so listen to their advice, if they say all drawers in a vanity aren't going to work because of the pipes for sinks then listen to them (even though this meant my dream of drawers was crushed!). They are right 99.9% of the time and ultimately want to build you something that you are so happy with you can't wait to tell everyone about it, thus sending more business their way!

Bathroom vanity design

I also think you get a more professional look when the cupboards have been custom made by a cabinet maker. But that's just my opinion and I haven't yet tackled the entire range of flat packs that are now available to do a proper comparison ....

UNTIL NOW THAT IS

The tables have turned with our laundry renovation and we are looking at installing flat packs ourselves because it is a fairly straight forward job with just one wall of upper head and base cabinets. Also there seems to be flat pack cabinets to fit our wall measurements - space and size were issues in the bathroom and kitchen, but in the laundry our measurements work well.

So we figured there's really no excuse not to jump on the flat pack bandwagon and give it a go!

We want a bank of upper head cabinets and base cabinets along this wall

We have narrowed it down to 3 different ranges of flat packs - Ikea who are modern designs and have lots of clever ideas and additions, Bunnings who are a bit cheaper and come with more included (legs, door hinges and shelf) and Masters who are cheap as well and seem to have a better quality and range of finishes.

I will keep you posted on our flat pack journey ....

Have you installed flat pack cabinets in your home?

Recipes: Autumn Soups

With the change in Seasons and now that the cooler Autumn weather is here, I have swapped my mid week meals of BBQs and refreshing salads with soups and warming comfort food.

Sundays are my day to put a big pot of soup on the stove and have it cook away while I tackle projects around the house. Then I know I have my comforting pot of soup in the fridge, ready on any night during the week when I don't feel like cooking I can just reheat and serve. Paired with a freshly baked loaf of bread from my bread maker and Mr P is happy too!

Here are some recipes I have saved to try over the coming cooler months ....

Mmmmm so many delicious soups to try.

Have you made any tasty soup recipes lately?
