A Day In Noumea, New Caledonia

The travel bug has been biting at me lately and I've been reminiscing about my last travel adventure - a week long cruise holiday on the Carnival Legend around the South Pacific Islands.

That holiday was 6 months ago and it's another 6 months until my next holiday (my Honeymoon!) so it makes me happy to write about one of the destination from the cruise - Noumea, New Caledonia.

Many of the cruise ships that visit the South Pacific Islands stop at this popular port stop and if you're one of those passengers or travelling to this part of the world and wondering what to do for a day in Noumea then this blog post is for you!

I've been to Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia 3 times on cruise holidays on board the Pacific Jewel, Voyager of the Seas and Carnival Legend.

What is really unusual about this South Pacific island is it has a French influence so you'll find supermarket shelves stocked with French wine and cheese and the local language and culture are a mixture of French and Melanesian. All while having an island vibe surrounded by beaches and palm trees swaying in the breeze.

Noumea really is a unique island and should be experienced and appreciated for it's uniqueness!

For some of these adventures you will need to book a tour and for others take a taxi or the local bus and explore yourself.

On a tour you will hear about the history, culture and knowledge a tour guide offers but you will have to deal with a bus load of people and stick to their time schedule for the day.

If you take a taxi you have freedom to do as you please but unless the taxi driver speaks english you may miss out on the interesting facts about Noumea along your travels.

If you have a day in Noumea, here's what you can do ....

First and foremost Noumea is an island surrounded by the ocean so you can do the usual beach things, head to Lemon Bay and go for a swim at Anse Vata beach, take a boat trip or water taxi to other islands, go fishing, snorkeling, etc.

There's a few fancy hotels dotted around the coast line and the posh area Tuband where you can spend a day by the pool sipping on cocktails and chillaxing.

In the area of Lemon Bay you can climb up to Ouen Toro the canon gun lookout, visit St Joseph's Cathedral Noumea's biggest church or spend a few hours looking at the local marine life at the Aquarium des lagons.

Take a tour through the country side which will give you totally different scenery and was one of my favourite days touring the outskirts of Noumea.

Stop at the natural spring in Mt Dore and admire the views of the island from the Church at La Conception.

It's interesting hearing about the neighboring towns and homes and seeing how the Noumea locals live.

Noumea is a busy business port but as for shopping it's mostly supermarkets, souvenir shops and a few boutique stores here and there.

There is great architecture on the buildings in the old town of Noumea and is worth a walk through.

As for the food, if you are into French cuisine then be sure to head to the Boulangerie Marais bakery for a fresh warm pain au chocolat. Go to the supermarket and pack a picnic with French cheese, meats, baguettes and a mini bottle of French wine and head down to the beach or the park to enjoy your French feast.

If you're looking for tours there's plenty of tour companies based in the Passenger Terminal at the port and all are reasonably priced and payable in Australian dollars or French Francs.

The cruise ship tours can be expensive and when there's other options to pick from it's a perfect opportunity to book with a local tour company. Booking direct with the tour company supports local business which is a great way to give back to the places you travel to.

I have done tours with Regent Tours and Noumea Shore Tours which I booked beforehand via email and paid on arrival. Both companies were well organised, great tour guides and drivers, and value for money.

Of all the adventures I've had in Noumea the best was discovering where the locals spent their day at Parc Forrister a beautiful Botanical Garden and Zoo just 4 kms from the city.

It was such a cheap day out and we saw and did so much. We walked into town and caught a taxi to the park which cost about $15 each way and this allowed us the freedom to walk around at our own pace.

When we were ready to head home the operator at the park entry called a taxi to pick us up. It also meant we could stop at the bakery on the way back for some pastries .... you can't do that on a tour bus!

The entry fees to get into the zoo were minimal just a few dollars. There is a small cafe at the entrance but I'd recommend packing some snacks and drinks, there are so many places to stop and have a picnic.

We could have easily spent a whole day here, it was great to walk around in the sunshine through the lush gardens and check out all the animals and birds. Heaps of peacocks roaming freely and I even saw a flock of flamingos, I was so excited I thought I'd have to trek to the Amazon to see them!

Noumea really is a unique island and should be experienced and appreciated for it's uniqueness!

Book Review: A Vintage Wedding By Katie Fforde

This is a book review of A Vintage Wedding by Katie Fforde recently published on 12 February 2015 by Random House UK, Cornerstone Publishing.

Catherine lives in Stroud, England with her husband, kids and pets. Catherine didn't start writing until after the birth of her third child and impressively this is her 21st novel.

This is a modern day romance set in a country village in England. There are 3 main women characters Rachel, Beth and Lindy who after meeting each other instantly hit it off and become friends and soon after business partners when they decide to become wedding planners and set up a business called Vintage Weddings.

This is a fluffy light hearted read and along the way Rachel, Beth and Lindy become more confident, fall in love (and lust!) and their friendship and business grows.

In the beginning I couldn't work out who was who and so I never really connected to any of the characters. It got better as the end got nearer and I felt I knew them more. Also because there was more romance and love stories towards the end which I liked.

I was most interested in the Vintage Wedding side of the story, where the woman set up their own wedding business. But when they started to decorate cakes from watching YouTube, and becoming make up artists and dress makers on the spot I just didn't find any of it believable. If only it was that easy!

I recommend this book to light hearted romance fans and anyone planning a vintage wedding.

I give this book 3 stars out of  5

Jarrah Jungle's Star Rating:
1 Bad - I'd rather eat brussel sprouts topped with anchovies than read this again

DIY Laundry Cupboard Shelving

Our laundry renovation is dragging on much longer than anticipated but we are starting to pick up the pace again with another DIY project completed on the weekend.

The built in cupboard in the laundry offers a heap of storage space and being right next to the kitchen is a perfect storage overflow to be used as an appliance cupboard - I can't be the Slow Cooker Queen without a place for my appliances!

The whole laundry was gutted, tiled and painted months ago and then nothing for a while until Lexi gave us that look ..... "For goodness sake you newly engaged love birds, stop with the wedding planning, and get back into renovating"!

So on the weekend we checked out the shelving in Masters and Bunnings but unfortunately all the shelves had a standard depth of 20mm, which is the same size as the old cupboard shelves and too small for appliances so we would be no better off getting those. We really needed something wider.

In Bunnings we looked at the sheets of wood and contemplating cutting them to size ourselves - then we spotted the long melamine shelves and had a brain wave that we could get an extra large piece and cut it in half thus making 2 shelves from 1 sheet.

Not only did this mean we would be paying less than $10 a shelf (when they are usually $20+ each) but these sheets came in a variety of depths so we could go as wide as the brackets allowed - a whopping 45mm which is more than double the standard shelf size.

We pretty much did a happy dance right there and then after finally come up with a plan that worked and saving money along the way. We spent $51.75 on 6 shelves Vs $120 for 6 standard size shelves.

Then it got even better because Bunnings do a free wood cutting service so the kind fella at the cut shop cut our sheets of melamine in half with his fancy saw in less than 5 minutes.

It would've taken us at least an hour to set up the saw at home and measure and measure and measure again before cutting the sheets ourselves so this saved us a heap of time too.

Back home Mr P wasted no time installing the shelving.

Firstly, getting the wall tracks nice and level and then screwing them into place.

Then each shelf bracket slot neatly into place and the shelf placed on top.

There are no wonky shelves when Mr P is DIYing, it has to be done right!

The extra wide brackets support the wide shelf perfectly and hold a maximum weight of over 100kgs which is way more than we need but good to know how strong they are.

All the fittings are a nice bright white colour too which is far nicer than the old aging beige colour the cupboard was before.

We managed to fit 5 shelves in the cupboard and this allows enough space on the ground and between shelves for some movement.

I'm hoping to fit the vacuum, brooms and mop bucket on the floor in here as well.

This is how the cupboard looked before - I know the shelves may look the same but they were very narrow at 20mm wide and couldn't hold the larger appliances very well.

The brackets were also wonky as they didn't sit flush against the shelf and they would wobble every time you took something off the shelf. It was a bit of a balancing act!

And after - the new shelves are twice the depth at a generous 45mm wide so I'll have no trouble fitting the appliances in here now.

The new brackets make them much more secure as they sit flush against the shelving. I have no concerns about anything falling down and breaking!

This was a great budget make over and I can't wait to unpack everything and fill up the shelves!

We purchased the wall tracks, brackets and shelves for under $150 and installed them in less than an hour.

Our next project in the laundry is to hang a new door on the cupboard and there are 2 more doors to be hung in here - one leading into the kitchen and the other an exterior door leading into the backyard. So a total of 3 doors to hang and paint and new handles to install.

It's time to get busy!

My Custom 'Jarrah Jungle' Art From Minted

I had a gift voucher to use at Minted which is a website where independent artists and designers can showcase their art, stationary, fabrics, homewares and more.

There's a huge variety to choose from and because you can personalise a lot of the items as well it makes it even harder to narrow it down. I spent hours looking through everything, the cards and invitations look amazing too and they'll even send you free samples!

I picked out these adorable straw flags for my engagement party, they were just too cute to resist and looked fantastic on the drinks table at the party!

Now what I was really interested in was the art.

Minted has hundreds of different artists and styles of art to choose from in the art marketplace and I narrowed it down by searching under the Custom Art Prints category so I could personalised the art by changing the colours and adding text.

I had a very special idea in mind for this art. As the laundry is the very last room to renovate inside our home I decided to do an ode to the Jarrah Jungle my blog namesake and my home and have some custom art named  'Jarrah Jungle'  for the laundry.

Here are some designs I played around with ....

And the winner is .....  Summer Pickled Poppies by the very talented Kelli Hall

Once I was happy with the art I could select the size, I went for A4 so it was large enough to be seen but not too big that framing it would be difficult. Most of the art comes in a variety of sizes.

As for the frame, you can have it framed or unframed and there were some really great frames to pick from and reasonably priced too but with shipping to Australia it was better to get it unframed so the shipping was just standard postage and then frame it myself.

It took me a while but I finally found the perfect box style frame for it from Spotlight for under $20. I love how it gives the art a real gallery type look.

Once framed I found a home for the art in the laundry, although I haven't committed to hanging it on the wall just yet, for now I love to see it leaning on the laundry bench it adds just the right pop of colour to the room.

I feel very special having my own piece of customised Jarrah Jungle art!

It won't be long until I can show you a proper 'after' blog post of the laundry renovation, we still have some doors to hang and paint, shelves to install, and a mirror to find and then we'll be done!

Have you added any new art to your home lately?

Disclosure: Thanks very much to Minted for providing me with a gift voucher. I have not received any payment or compensation. As always, all opinions are my own.

Book Club Book Review: Between Shades Of Gray By Ruta Sepetys

My Book Club read for the month of February was Between Shades Of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

This is based on a true story from the 1940s during World War 11 and told by 15 year old Lina, who along with her 10 year old brother and parents are taken from their comfortable home in Lithuanian by the Russians because they were on a list of people thought to be anti-Soviet.

Taken from their home town, they travelled with hundreds of others, in poor conditions across the Arctic Circle to Siberia. Most of the men were sent off to prisons and never seen by their families again, whilst the women, children and elderly were sent to work camps to work for little food and poor living conditions.

Lina is a confident teenager and an artist who draws pictures of her experience and these pictures have been turned into the words of the novel. The book was written in such a way that I felt the hunger pains when they did, I felt the sadness and helpless and could even visualise the drawings in detail.

This was a really moving and beautifully written book about such a sad part of our history.

I recommend this to young adult fiction fans interested in history and the forgotten stories of World War 11.

I give this book 4 stars out of  5

He Popped The Question - Engagement Party Gift Bags

I have a creative project on the blog today on making personalised gift bags, these party bag kits would be great for Birthday parties, Christmas gifts, all kinds of celebrations.

As soon as our engagement invitations and stationary were sorted and I had the number of RSVPs I moved onto the next project which was to make gift bags for all our guests.

Pinterest has so many great ideas for this kind of thing and the He Popped The Question popcorn bags were just too adorable to resist for a pair of popcorn lovers like us!

Thanks so much to Avery for providing some of their celebrations range products for review including these party bag kits which were perfect for this project!

The party bag kit comes with small clear sealable bags and white adhesive toppers that you personalise online and print out.

For the design of the toppers I followed the same process as I did for the invitations and address labels.

On the Design and Print section of the website I entered the product code and then copied the design of the invitations over to the toppers so they matched. I played around with the font size and style until I was happy with it.

The toppers print both sides so I had Peter popped the question .... Michelle said yes on one side and then Thank you for celebrating with us and the date of our party on the other.

Now to fill the bags with popcorn, I researched some bulk popcorn providers and ended up getting the popcorn from Gourmet Popcorn at the Fremantle Markets after having a taste test of their delicious salted caramel popcorn ..... so tasty!

I worked it out that I would need 80g per bag but this turned out to be way too much. Instead of the 5kg I ordered I really only needed half of that and 2kg would have been plenty to do the 80 bags. The popcorn cost $20 per kilo.

With the leftover popcorn I bagged it up in large snap lock bags and handed it out to friends and family and anyone else that would take it!

I filled each bag with a cup or so of popcorn, pushed all the air out of the bag and removed the adhesive strip to seal the bags. It's really good that the bags are sealable as they kept the popcorn fresh and secure.

Once the bags were sealed the toppers could be attached.

The toppers had a strong adhesive on them and I worked out the best way to attach them was to fold the topper backwards (away from the sticky!) so they would bend on the perforated edge and they would then fold neatly around either side of the bag.

As the adhesive was sticking to plastic if it stuck on a bit crooked it was easy to peel off and re-attach. They were quite forgiving really!

Now for the hole in the topper just to finish them off, for half I tied a piece of ribbon and for the other half I tied a piece of string.

That was all there was too it, they were now all bagged up and ready to go.

I made up the bags the day before the party to make sure the popcorn kept as fresh as possible. The popcorn was also made fresh and collected the same day.

I'm lucky I had some friends to help me with this project, from picking up the popcorn to making up the bags, we had a bit of a production line going to get them bagged quickly to keep them fresh.

I filled baskets with the party bags and had them on the gift table at the engagement party.

I made sure everyone went home with a party bag and by the end of the night the baskets were empty there was not even one popcorn kernel left which is a good sign!

Now tell me honestly did you get it straight away: Popped the question ..... Popcorn?!

There were more than a few "Ooooohhhhhhhh I get it!" on the night but I think some people still didn't really get it!

Maybe they just thought we really like popcorn, which we do!!

Book Review: Arkie's Pilgrimage To The Next Big Thing by Lisa Walker

This is a book review of Arkie's Pilgrimage To The Next Big Thing by Lisa Walker recently published on 2 February 2015 by Random House Australia.

Lisa Walker was born in Holland, grew up in Fiji, spent her teenage years in Brisbane, and she now lives in New South Wales with her husband and sons. This is Lisa's third novel.

This is a funny and inspiring story of Arkie a 40 something Australian woman in the midst of a divorce and on a mission to get her mojo and her life back.

Arkie befriends a Japanese girl Haruko and together they go on a modern day pilgrimage around Australia's big things, as a twist to the traditional pilgrimages throughout Japan.

This is an upbeat and interesting read, especially for those interested in travelling Australia and it's big things .... The Big Pineapple, The Big Banana, The Big Prawn, The Big Macadamia, etc.

This story has a lot of hidden meaning and inspiration too and I found the spiritual side of the book interesting and uplifting.

It was a very easy book to read, the writing flowed, and I felt that I was right alongside Arkie and Haruko on their journey.

I recommend this book to anyone who has lost their mojo or is on a search to find yourself, you might just find what you're looking for in this book.

I give this book 4 stars out of  5
