A Long Overdue Update

Hey guys,

I feel like I owe you a big apology for my ridiculously long absence from the blog!

We finished our home renovations and sold our block which was the reason I started this blog in the first place - for the before and afters, DIY projects and how tos, which are all documented here. I don't want to leave my readers in the lurch, so just so you know, I'm alive and well! I absolutely love the home that we have created and after many years of renovating we can now relax and enjoy our renovated home.

I'm still very active on my Jarrah Jungle social media channels - if you don't follow me yet please do - I'm on Instagram and Facebook. I share lots of yummy recipes for easy home cooked meals, family life and the occasional book review.

Quick and easy dinner ideas

So what else has been happening ....... Work wise I decided not to return to my corporate job, after working in the city for over 20 years and doing the 9-5 grind every day I'm having a much needed break from that lifestyle for a while.

Instead I'm enjoying a change of pace being a stay at home Mum to Miss A who has just turned 3, she is a gorgeous little girl, kind, happy and loves books (just like her Mum!). Mr P has become a BBQ King and between the smoker, weber, and BBQ we are being well fed as are our friends and family who love to join us for tasty BBQ!

Miss A and Lexi

My passion for home decorating has lead me down a completely new path and I'm in the midst of setting up my own small business BRING ON THE BOHO an online store with beautiful bohemian style home decor - big floor cushions, beautiful hand stitched quilts, vibrant embroidered scatter cushions and soft furnishings.

I'd love for you to check out Bring On The Boho on Facebook and Instagram - I'm currently building the website and online shop which is due to launch later this year. I've always had an eye for interior design and decorating and it feels so good to be working on something I'm truly passionate about - finding stunning decor products to fill homes with colour and life.

Thanks for reading, I hope you are well and happy, please pop over to my social channels and say Hello!

Take care

Introducing Our Little Baby Girl ... Miss A

Apologies for my absence on the blog these last few months this has been the longest break I've had in the 7 years I've been blogging!

I have a pretty good excuse .... Mr P and I welcomed our little baby girl Amelia (who will be known as Miss A on the blog) into the world on 16 May 2017 at 1.21pm she weighed 3.040kg and was 48cm long.

I had plenty of time before Miss A was born to nest at home, re-arrange all the cupboards and do a big spring clean, get the nursery ready, and was on Dr's orders to rest and take care of my health. By the end I was a bit over being pregnant and some of the health issues that came with it and was ready for our little Miss A to arrive and that she did a bit earlier than expected, when I was 38 weeks pregnant, the day after my Birthday so we'll now be sharing a Birthday weekend!

The birth was nothing like I thought it would be and was the opposite of my birth plan although I'll spare you all the details other than to say I went into labor at home and thankfully Mr P made it home from work and got me to the hospital because 40 minutes later Miss A was born.

I'm so very thankful Miss A is a healthy baby and while I had some health issues during the pregnancy and after the birth I'm happy to say I'm feeling back to my normal self now, well besides the sleep deprivation that is!

These last few months have been a blur of sleepless nights and newborn cuddles and getting to know our Miss A and working out this whole parenthood gig.

I still can't believe that I'm a Mum .... but the endless loads of baby clothes I am washing, the nappies I have changed and the constant feeding certainly proves that I am! Speaking of clothes my Mum unpacked an old trunk full of baby clothes that were mine when I was a baby, a lot was handmade and knitted or crochet by my Nanna (Miss A's great-grandmother) and it's so special to dress Miss A in my old baby clothes (like the yellow and blue cardis, white bonnet, booties and shoes above) I just need to dress her in a mix of vintage and modern clothes so she doesn't look too old fashioned!

I'm on maternity leave for a year and after 20 years of working I'm really enjoying being at home. Mr P had a few weeks off work in the beginning and is a very hands on Dad and was the one who had to show me how to change a nappy!

I'm lucky to have support from friends and family who drop in when I need a hand and give Miss A some cuddles so I can have a shower or get dinner ready - my slow cooker has been a lifesaver I can make dinner while Miss A naps (babies sleep A LOT!) and dinner cooks during the day and keeps warm until Mr P gets home from work and we can eat together.

Our rescue dog Lexi has been really good with Miss A and taking on the protective big sister role well. I just know these two are going to grow up being the best of friends!

We are loving spending time at home as a little family and while the days blend into weeks and months already I am enjoying this slower pace to life right now.

While I'm in this newborn bubble I won't be blogging as regularly as I was before but you can keep in touch with Jarrah Jungle daily on my social media pages - Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Welcome to the blog Miss A!

First Comes Love. Then Comes Marriage. Then Comes .....

I mentioned some exciting news in my 2017 one word blog post but just in case you missed it

First comes love,
Then comes marriage,
Then comes a baby in a baby carriage ....
That's right - Mr P and I are going to be parents with our little one due in May!

As a first time Mum I'm excited, happy, nervous and a little bit shit scared all at once!

Mr P and I have thought long and hard over the years about this next venture in our lives into parenthood and feel the time is right and are really looking forward to what the future brings in starting our own little family.

We have told all our family and friends the news face to face before we shared it with the world and it has been so wonderful seeing the happiness it has brought to everyone - especially my parents as it will be their very first grandchild (just wait until you see my DIY announcement and how we told them the news) !

As you can see our rescue dog Lexi is also beyond thrilled to be promoted to big sister!

I've been a career woman for 20 years working in the city 5 days a week and what a change it's going to be in my new role as a stay at home Mum. I'm taking a whole year off work to go on maternity leave and stay at home and look after my little one. What a great country we live in to be given the option of maternity leave and job security knowing that my job will be held for me to return to.

I am actually quite looking forward to the change and being able to spend more time at home being a domestic goddess. I'm hoping I'll have time to bake treats for Mr P's lunchbox and cook yummy dinners for us, keep on top of the housework and be a real domestic goddess ..... But I know the reality is I'll probably spend most of my day covered in baby vomit, serving up burnt toast for dinner and with all those baby clothes to wash I'll probably never see the bottom of my laundry basket again!

BUT what an adventure this next life chapter will be!

Practically speaking the first thing Mr P and I started to consider is where we will live and raise our little one - we are torn between the big decision of moving to a bigger family home now or staying in our beloved Jarrah Jungle where we have lived for over 7 years and re-organise a few rooms so we can fit in a nursery.

We have been researching suburbs which are good for young families and have been stalking houses for sale online every day and have been to a few home opens on the weekends too. If we don't find our dream home soon then we will stop house hunting and stay put in our Jarrah Jungle home and have a big spring clean out and get it family friendly ready!

We have been powering through an epic to do list to finish the last of our renovating projects to get the house all finished so that we can put the tools down and focus on spending time as a family for a while.

Where ever we end up I'm so excited about designing and decorating the nursery. I've helped a couple of friends set up their nursery and shared ideas on furniture, layout and decor and now I'll be putting those practical and pretty ideas together for an awesome nursery for our own little one.

If you follow me on Pinterest I apologise in advance for the nursery inspiration I have been pinning lately there are so many beautiful nursery designs I'll be sharing my nursery inspiration on the blog soon.

Holy duly I can't believe I'm going to be a mumma!

First time Mum to be advice is welcome and encouraged!!

1000th Blog Post Milestone

This marks the 1000th yes that's one thousand blog posts that I have written, edited and published on my beloved Jarrah Jungle blog over the last 6 years.

I've got to say I'm proud of my achievement of being consistent and writing for so long.

I spend a lot of time on my blog keeping it up to date and it's been a big dedication and commitment over the years - even more so now with social media channels attached to my blog it could almost be a full time (unpaid!) job to keep my blog and social media following up to date.

Learning how to build a website and maintain it is also a continuing learning curve and I intend to keep building on and improving the look of my blog this year.

My blog is my creative outlet and place to share stories and write whatever I feel like.

Although it's mostly home related of course as that is why I started to blog in the first place to document our home renovations. I can't believe 6 years on we are still renovating - it has been so long we are starting to renovate the renovations and now we are turning it into a family friendly home there will be many more home loving blog posts to come.

I also love to write about my travel adventures, share my latest book reviews and tasty recipes.

With big changes afoot in my work life as I transition from full time career woman to stay at home Mum I'm hoping that being able to blog during the day instead of late at night after work will be a positive thing.

I really want to focus on the business side of my blog more and see what I can do better and improve on this year. I am planning to upgrade my old ancient laptop to a newer fancier model as well which will help too as this old laptop can't even keep up with my fast typing speed and drives me nuts!

Thanks for reading 999 blog posts and if you've made it all the way down here thanks for reading 1000! I really appreciate your comments, likes, shares and support of my blog all these years so thank you so much!!

Please let me know what you would like to see more of on the blog this year - What blog posts do you like to read? More recipes? More creative projects? Product reviews? Something else!

I'd love to hear from you let me know in a comment below or drop me an email at jarrahjungle@hotmail.com

My One Word 2017 - Grow

Hi everyone! Happiest of New Years to you!!

At the start of each year, instead of writing a list of new year resolutions I won't stick to, I think about just one word to live by for the next 12 months that will act as my new year resolution - a word to focus on and strive towards.

The idea of having one word came from beautiful blogger Maxabella Loves and you can share your own One Word For 2017 over on Maxabella Loves.

My previous words over the years have been

Going back to my 2016 word change I was a newlywed and being married was an exciting milestone in my life and I wanted to think about change in a positive way because let's face it change can be scary and daunting as it's the fear of the unknown. I really feel that I lived by that word last year and challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone and make and embrace changes in my life and more importantly within myself.

The biggest change for me on a personal note was deciding if I wanted to be a Mum and start a family with my amazing husband Mr P. It took many years to come to this decision as it will bring so many changes to my body, freedom, wants and needs, a career I've focused on for 20 years, and to the relationship between Mr P and I as we make room for a little bundle of nappies and smiles. Becoming parents was not a decision we made lightly but we decided we were finally ready and I'm excited to say I have a bun in the oven with our little one due in May!

Now if that's not living by my 2016 word change I don't know what is!

Without further ado my one word for 2017 is GROW

Just like a seed being planted or a flower about to bloom I am focused on the word grow this year.

On the inside I want to bloom and grow into my new role as a Mum. I can barely change a nappy and have so much to learn about what being Mum is all about. So much personal growth is in front of me and it's a little ok a lot daunting but I know I can do it.

On the outside I'm halfway through my pregnancy and my baby bump is growing bigger by the day. I'm learning to embrace the changes my body is going through and not let doubt and worry get the better of me. Afterall millions of women go through this every year and if they can do it so can I.

Mr P and I's home is going to grow and fill with love as we start our little family. This also means making room for our new addition to the household and turning our beloved Jarrah Jungle into a family home is at the very top of our to do list.

So much growing to do on the inside and outside this year and grow is such a perfect word for me to embrace.

I felt quite emotional typing this blog post today and I don't normally get so personal, what can I say, it must by the pregnancy hormones!

If you had to pick just one word to live by this year .... what would it be?

I Am Sydney Bound

I'm signing off the blog this week as I'm heading to Sydney for a few days to attend a work conference.

You can keep in touch with me on the Jarrah Jungle Facebook, Instagram and Twitter pages

I missed the conference last year as I was dealing with some health issues but I'm fighting fit this time around and looking forward to going this year. This will be my 5th year I've attended the conference and it's always good to keep learning and developing skills.

I always look forward to an interstate trip and it's a real treat to have a hotel room all to myself with room service and no cooking or housework to do!

I will see you back on the blog next week hopefully with another book review as I'll have some time to read on the 5 hour flights!

Have a wonderful week everyone x

Jarrah Jungle - 6th Year Blog-versary

My beloved Jarrah Jungle blog, my creative outlet and diary of our home renovations, is turning a big 6 years old today!

HAPPY BLOG-VERSARY TO THE JARRAH JUNGLE BLOG!

Thank you all so very much, YES YOU my awesome readers, for supporting my blog, stopping by and leaving a comment, sharing or liking Jarrah Jungle on social media, it makes it all worthwhile to connect with the blogging community and readers from all across the world.

Boy oh boy what changes I've seen over the last 6 years within the blogging community.

There are so many well known blogs that have stopped updating their blogs (like Young House Love my inspiration for starting this blog!). Certainly bloggers aren't blogging every day like they use to - it was hard to keep up I read blogs more than books back then! I write 2-3 blog posts a week and while I love the easiness of social media and I share on there daily - you just can't beat having a landing page and a blog to call your own.

I work full time as an office administrator in a legal office (my real day job) and blog after hours in my spare timeI'm not going to lie it's a lot of work having a blog and it's working for free too which is why you rely so much on the connection from readers so you don't feel like you're doing it all for nothing.

For anyone new who may not know how the Jarrah Jungle blog
came about here is a little about it .....

I started the Jarrah Jungle blog in 2010 about 8 months after I moved into a do-er-up house with my then boyfriend and now husband Mr P.

As we started tackling our first renovation my passion for interior design really came alive and I wanted somewhere to diarise the before and afters on the house, to share where I found bargains and good buys and indulge in my love for turning our house into a home.

The blog name Jarrah Jungle is a namesake to the jarrah wood throughout the house - the floorboards, shelving in cupboards, even the roof beams are solid jarrah. The backyard was a bit of a jungle too so the name fit perfectly!

I love to write about our DIY projects and renovations we are tackling. When the paint brushes are put away I also write regular book reviews and share recipes and other happenings around the Jarrah Jungle home.

I think like minded home lovers identify with my blog because they can follow a renovation by real people getting our hands dirty - there's no Lifestyle Channel TV crew helping us, just Mr P and I, our sense of humour, hard work and passion for turning our house into a home!

Thanks again for reading and being around for these 6 years .... you guys are awesome!

I wonder what the 7 year itch will bring!

Holiday At Home + A Blog Break

Mr P and I are having a week off work next week so I've decided to sign off the blog for a week as well.

You can still keep in touch with me on the Jarrah Jungle social media pages - InstagramFacebook and Twitter

We will be holidaying at home and plan on doing some relaxing, chillaxing and tv remote holding. Lazy morning sleep-ins, homemade brunch and cocktail hour are all on the agenda.

We'll be doing a bit of DIY (of course!) in the new courtyard garden - in anticipation of the outdoor paving getting laid out here this month we'll be getting some pots and plants set up and finding some outdoor furniture and decor (my favourite part ... the decorating!).

I want to do some Spring cleaning around the house - the bathroom cupboards are getting a bit unruly. Plus the guest bedroom and study which have become a bit of a dumping ground.

I need to do a good clear out and find a new home for things or get rid of them if I haven't looked at them or used them in over a year!

Friends have invited us to stay with them in Jurien Bay a seaside town about 2 hours drive from home. So we may sneak off for a few days and take Lexi on a beachside getaway if we can find a house sitter!

I'm really looking forward to some time off to holiday at home!

I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Do you have anything exciting planned?

My Word For The Year 2016: Change

Instead of making a list of new year resolutions that I know I won't stick to - I come up with just ONE WORD that I will adhere to, think about and live by for the year ahead.

The idea of having ONE WORD originally came from the lovely blogger Maxabella Loves and you can link up your ONE WORD with Maxabella Loves here until the end of January.

My previous words for the year have been:

Last year my word LOVE was absolutely perfect and it was at the forefront of my mind when I planned our engagement party and our wedding.

I made sure that it was always in my mind that it was all about the love ..... It wasn't a time to be stressed or anxious, it wasn't about a fancy wedding dress or spending a fortune and going into debt, but to live the year reminded of Mr P and I and our love for one another.

Nawwww who knew I could be so loved up and mushy mush!

Now for this year's word, usually it's that one word that jumps out at me when I start to think about the year ahead, the projects and plans, the goals and dreams I'm thinking about and hope to achieve this year.

With that in mind, my word for 2016 is:
CHANGE

There are so many changes happening this year in my home life it is both scary and exciting all at once! So this whole year is going to be about CHANGE: Growing, adapting, taking risks, facing challenges, it's all about CHANGE.

On the domestic front, I am now a married woman (yipee!) and that has been a big change in itself! Although Mr P and I have lived together for 7 years it does feel different now we are officially husband and wife and there are some changes (including name changes!) that need to be worked out and sorted through now that we are Mrs and Mr P !

I'm still very much in the newlyweds stage and find the whole being married thing very exciting, we both grin like love struck teenagers whenever we say husband and wife and I hope I still get a buzz out if it well after the honeymoon period is over!

There will be changes afoot in our beloved Jarrah Jungle home this year too.

We will finish all the renovations inside and out and once it's all complete we will most likely put our house up for sale (if the Perth property market improves).

It is a bittersweet feeling knowing we've put our blood, sweat and tears into renovating our home and turning it into our love nest. But we feel we are ready for a change, we have outgrown our first home now, our wants and needs have changed, and we are ready to find a new place.

Just last week we started to seriously look for a new home, we ventured out to a few home opens and drove around the suburbs we are looking at moving to, to see if we like the area.

This will be a massive change if we move suburbs and we are researching shops, transport, dog parks, and everything else that needs to be considered when you move .... a big yard for Lexi is a must on the wish list too!

If we do sell and move house, this will mean changes to the Jarrah Jungle blog - the whole reason for me starting this blog was to document the adventures of first time home renovating.

Over the last 5 years I have grown to love and rely on this creative space of mine and so long as I have a home to decorate and improve on - I'm sure I will always have content and ideas to write about here. Let's face it, no matter where I live there's always going to be home improvement projects to tackle, decorating ideas, recipes and dinner parties to be thrown, so the blog will still be here with the same home loving content.

Who knows we may end up with a complete gut and renovate home again and it could be Jarrah Jungle 11 all over again!

Of course, it wouldn't be a new year resolution without a healthy option included right!

Mr P and I are both trying to change our diet and eat more fresh produce and less sugar (have you seen That Sugar Film? Scary stuff!).

We are both pretty healthy home cooks already, but are making a conscious effort to include more fresh vegetables and salad in every meal and less processed packaged ingredients.

It's just a matter of being organised, menu planning meals each week, and making sure we have plenty of healthy food in the fridge. I'm sure this change will be an easy one to make and our bodies will thank us for it.

It's shaping up to be a big year of changes and I'm really excited about it ..... A change is as good as a holiday right!

How are your new year resolutions going? Do you have a word for 2016?

You can link up your ONE WORD with Maxabella Loves here until the end of January

Summer Holidays - Christmas + New Year

I've had a blissful few weeks off work enjoying the Summer holidays at home and even managed a mini getaway down south for a few days.

Mr P and I gave ourselves a complete renovating free break which is a first for us - we didn't tackle any projects around the house and put the tools down for the first time ever

We really enjoyed ourselves over the break catching up with friends and family, went swimming, slept in, had movie marathons, read books, just really relaxed and recharged the batteries which is just what the Dr ordered after a really hectic and busy end to 2015.

We dog sat as well so even Lexi had a buddy to hang out with over the holidays!

We had a busy Christmas Day having lunch with Mr P's family which was a traditional roast lunch with hot meats and vegetables and delicious desserts.

Then dinner with my family was a typical Aussie Christmas feast of seafood and salads. We stayed over on my parents farm which was really relaxing and the dogs loved it being able to run free and breathe in the fresh country air.

Boxing Day we caught up with more of my family and had a picnic down by the Mandurah foreshore making the most of the hot and sunny weather.

After the Christmas festivities we went on a road trip and stayed down south with Mr P's family on their vineyard property near Manjimup, Western Australia which is about 3.5 hours drive from home.

We worked in the vineyard lifting wires to help the vines grow, went marroning and fishing in the dam, had cocktail hour every afternoon with cheese and wine, bbq dinners out on the deck overlooking the property, we had the best little family getaway with our furbaby Lexi she loved being able to run around in all that open space.

For New Years Eve we drove back from Manjimup during the day and went to a Mexican Soiree party that night with lots of delicious Mexican food and tasty mojito cocktails.

I made my yummy Mexican layered dip which was a party favourite and we lit up the sparklers, did the count down, and I started the New Year with a kiss from my now husband Mr P!

2015 had some incredible highs but it also had some lows too and I'm really looking forward to new challenges and exciting adventures in 2016.

I hope you had a Happy Christmas and enjoyable New Year and a fun holiday season.

What did you get up to for Christmas and New Years?

Merry Christmas + A New Year Wish

It's that time of year again when I'm getting ready to sign off the blog for the year

But before I do I just want to share a little recap of life and home lately and what the future holds for the Jarrah Jungle blog in 2016 .....

On life lately .....

This year I've had so many highs with some of the most special moments of my life ..... I had an amazing engagement party, a dream wedding, married the love of my life and had some awesome honeymoon adventures travelling around the USA.

But I've also had some lows health-wise which has knocked me for a spin and I'm still recovering from. When you have issues with your health you really start to re-evaluate your life and the way that you live, who you want to spend your time with and what you want to spend your time doing.

I've been doing a lot of soul searching lately and hope that 2016 will bring more of what makes me happy and my heart sing!

On the home front

The plan for next year on the home front is to finish our house renovations so we can spend time in the house and really enjoy what we've done before we sell it and move on - we will most likely sell our beloved Jarrah Jungle next year and also the block that we are subdividing.

It is really just the exterior we are working on now - in the backyard we need to put up fences, a deck and landscape and in the front yard we also need to landscape.

The inside of the house has been finished and completely renovated which is a great feeling and I just love what we've done with our own hands - our blood, sweat and tears have turned a neglected old house into our very own love shack and beloved home.

On being an office chick ... for 19 years!

On the work front I have 2 weeks off while the office shuts down for the Christmas Break and will re-open in the New Year. I love that the whole company closes so everyone has a break.

When I go back to work in January 2016 - this will mark 19 years that I've worked with the same company which is more than half my life and is just an incredible milestone for me. In January 2017 I will get my 20 years long service leave (I've already had my 10 years long service leave!) which is something I'm very much looking forward to!

I have worked full time, 5 days a week, for 19 years, without any more than the standard 4 weeks leave a year - that's a lot of alarm clocks I've hit the snooze button on over the years!

On the blog - Jarrah Jungle

I have been wondering about the future of my blog for 2016 - I've been blogging for 5 years now and it still feeds my creative side and I feel proud of the Jarrah Jungle name that I've created.

But people are blogging a lot less nowadays and instead are choosing to share via social media - tweeting, instagraming or posting on Facebook. Social media is great for quick engagement but I still think you need the blog as a landing pad.

Whilst it takes more time and effort to blog, I know my blog will always be here like a journal recording my recipes, book reviews and renovations to date - social media just can't do that as it only holds the most recent information and the rest seems to fall down a black hole and disappear.

I will have to wait and see what the future holds for my beloved Jarrah Jungle blog but one thing I know for sure is that I want to continue writing and creating and sharing content here with you all. I just hope that you will still be on the other side reading and sharing the journey with me!

There are some exciting and challenging times ahead in the New Year and I'll be back rested and rearing to go in early January 2016.

You can always find me sharing snippets of what's happening on my Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

I want to say a big thank you to all my readers near and far for your comments and kind words throughout the year you guys are awesome!

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your family, friends, and those that mean the most to you and my wish for you in 2016 is good health and happiness XXX

See you next year!
