A New Blender For Healthy Smoothies + Juices

One of my new year resolutions this year is to improve my health by eating more fruit and vegetables and to cut back on processed foods and sugar wherever possible.

I know what you're thinking another fad diet .... But this is not a diet it's more a lifestyle choice and it's a couple of months in now and Mr P and I are still sticking to it which is a good sign!

The turning point for me was when I watched That Sugar Movie an Australian movie about all the hidden and processed sugar in food - I always thought I was being healthy going for the 'low fat' options when in fact these have less fat but more sugar in them than standard food.

The only way to avoid hidden sugar is to make food and drinks from scratch wherever possible. The best place for us to start was to not buy any more packaged drinks (breakfast drinks like Up and Go and fruit juices) and make our own fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies.

The quickest and easiest way to make our own drinks is with a blender.

There are heaps of different blenders on the market and after a bit of research we found a large 2 Ltr Blender Kitchen Chef Mix Master which we purchased online with delivery for under $100 which is a good investment as it wasn't as expensive as a lot of blenders on the market.

The smaller blenders like Nutribullet only make 1 cup so it would take twice as long to make 2 breakfast smoothies for the both of us so the large 2 Ltr blender works really well for us.

I have discovered the vegetable smoothies can taste a little bitter and need sweetening up.

Fruit is great for sweetness and flavour but I need to be careful not to have too much because of the sugar content. Lots of people suggested sweetening the smoothies by adding coconut water which I must try. I also bought a vanilla flavoured protein powder which adds a bit of sweet flavour and also helps me feel full for longer.

I found a few smoothie recipes to try online with mostly green vegetables and a little bit of fruit.

This green veggie smoothie was packed full of goodness made with - kale, spinach, celery, apple, pear, banana, mint, water and ice. Some days I like it a bit more sweet and add a dried date.

I admit I love the milky smoothies for a bit of a treat they are really tasty.

This banana smoothie had lots of goodness in it made with - banana, pear, avocado, flaxseeds, cashews, almonds, milk and ice.

It is still early days but so far the breakfast smoothies are working really well for us.

Compared to having no breakfast to now having this boost of good food every morning has already improved how I feel.

This one has: Carrot, orange, watermelon, lemon, flaxseeds, protein powder, water and ice.

Every second weekend I wash, chop and bag up two weeks worth of smoothies, label them with the ingredients and put them into zip lock bags and into the freezer ready to go. Every weekend I chop up lots of fruit to last the week and put it into plastic containers in the fridge so it's easy to add a handful here and there.

Preparing the ingredients in advance has been a big help for early morning work days so it only takes a few minutes to grab a bag from the freezer, put it into the blender and add water or milk, seeds, protein powder or whatever extras we feel like having that day.

There are so many combinations you can make as well it's quite an adventure coming up with different combinations.

The worse combination I've had so far is when Mr P didn't eat his salad for dinner so blended it up for our breakfast smoothie the next day ... Spinach, lettuce, cucumber, capsicum, tomato, red onion, carrot, corn and a boiled egg .... I was not impressed when I found out about the egg in my smoothie it just wasn't the same as having eggs for breakfast in a traditional way!

This one has: Frozen raspberries, watermelon, orange, coconut, cinnamon and ice.

Other than the salad and egg incident I am loving my homemade breakfast smoothies and juices!

My favourite combinations are the fruity ones with watermelon, orange and frozen berries.

What's your favourite smoothie combination ?

It's My Birthday .... Almost !!!

So it's my Birthday tomorrow and maybe it's a sign of growing older or heaven forbid growing up but just like last year I'm not organising an entire week of Birthday celebrations this year.

I know it's a shock right!

I'm having just a few days off work for a chilled out Birthday, no big party or celebrations planned, I just want to spend time catching up with friends, drinking champagne, a bit of pampering at the day spa (always my Birthday present to myself!) and a romantic date night with my love Mr P.

And I'm one happy May babe!

If I'm not on the blog over the next few days (blame the champagne and relaxing massage bliss!) then you can always find me on Facebook and Instagram sharing snippets of my days.

Book Review and Preview: New Life, No Instructions: A Memoir By Gail Caldwell

This is a book review and preview of the book New Life, No Instructions: A Memoir by Gail Caldwell that was published on 1 April 2014.

The author Gail Caldwell has written two previous memoirs and this is her third. Gail lives in Massachusetts with her Samoyed dog named Tula.

This is a memoir of Gail's life. It takes you from her earliest childhood memories of doing exercises with her mother to help her with her polio through the dark stages of depression in her 30s and into who she is today, a grown woman reaching towards 60 who is facing a turning point in her life.

A lot of the story is based around Gail having polio which was quite common in the 1950s and how this affected her all throughout her life (although she often hated to show it!).

Gail has a love for animals and especially Samoyed's, the sled pulling snow dogs. She spent a lot of time explaining what it was like to raise pups into loyal dogs who will be by your side and your companion for life.

This was a fairly short and easy book to read that I finished in just a few days. I liked this book straight away, just a few pages in and I was hooked with the writing style because it was relaxed and flowed easily. I found Gail very likable although I did feel sorry for her illness and depressive stages in life that she went through. But she always stayed positive and had such a great outlook on life that you know she was a fighter and would come out on top. I also related well to the dog talk being a new fur Mum myself and know what it's like to have the unconditional love of a pet.

I recommend this book to dog lovers and also anyone struggling with an illness and interested in a true story of how you can overcome life's obstacles.

I give this book 3 stars out of 5

Jarrah Jungle's Star Rating:
1 Bad - I'd rather eat brussel sprouts topped with anchovies than read this again
2 Not Good - I'd rather watch re-runs of Neighbours than read this again
3 Ok - I'm sitting on the fence - its not great but not terrible either
4 Good - I'd pass up a pack of tim tams for this read
5 Great - I'd pass up a date with Johnny Depp for this read

Recipes: Autumn Soups

With the change in Seasons and now that the cooler Autumn weather is here, I have swapped my mid week meals of BBQs and refreshing salads with soups and warming comfort food.

Sundays are my day to put a big pot of soup on the stove and have it cook away while I tackle projects around the house. Then I know I have my comforting pot of soup in the fridge, ready on any night during the week when I don't feel like cooking I can just reheat and serve. Paired with a freshly baked loaf of bread from my bread maker and Mr P is happy too!

Here are some recipes I have saved to try over the coming cooler months ....

Mmmmm so many delicious soups to try.

Have you made any tasty soup recipes lately?

Recipes: Home Made Juice

I'm jumping on the healthy home made juice band wagon and have found some delicious home made juice recipes to try.

I remember my parents had an electric juicer that we'd pull out the cupboard on the weekend and make a few different types of juices .... no doubt in an attempt to hide fruit and vegetables when we were kids (which it did!). But as with many appliances it was put in the cupboard to collect dust and crumbs over the years until I remembered it last weekend and raided my parents cupboard and took it home with me!

Here are some recipes I have flagged to try out ...

Most of these juice recipes look pretty easy to make - buy the ingredients, wash and chop, put into juicer, drink delicious healthy juices and turn into a fabulously healthy person!

Sounds easy enough, let's hope it is!

Do you make juices at home?

What's your favourite combination?

The Start Of Spring

The cold wet days of Winter are officially behind us now that we have entered September ... the start of Spring here in Aussie Land!

The birds have come out in their flocks chirping and nesting their way through the trees in the neighborhood denying any hope of a morning sleep in. The flowers and fruit trees are all in bloom and their fragrance leads me into a sneezing fit whenever I step outside. Everything seems to come alive this time of year.

I tend to eat different in Spring as well ... the pots of warming soup and hearty dinners are replaced with lighter meals, like salads and BBQ dinners. I try to make the most of the fruits and vegetables that are in season, not only are they cheaper to buy in season but they taste so much better and stay fresher for long as well.

The thing I love most about Spring is it's still daylight when I leave the office which makes a world of difference to getting out and about and exercising. I can take Lexi for more walks around the park - great for her to let off some of that puppy energy and great for me to get some exercise.

It really is such a pretty time of year ...
What do you love about Spring?

Friday's Letter - Dear Buns Of Steel

Happy Friday everyone! I'm sharing my Friday's Letters with Ashley at The Sweet Season head on over here to link up your letters too.

Today I'm imagining I'm writing my letters from this cosy home office space surrounded by pops of yellow and sipping on a lemon tea.

Dear Buns Of Steel - I've been walking the 30 minutes to and from the buss every day for 3 weeks now and I'm so damn proud of myself. The cold rainy weather hasn't stopped me yet I'm determined get me some buns of steel!

Dear Lexi - Week 18 and you barked like you've never barked before at our brickie whenever he started working with the noisy wet saw. It was great to hear you bark but probably not so nice to scare the wits out of him!

Dear Kitchen Reno - We have just 2 weekends left to get so many things ticked off the kitchen action plan ... this weekend we'll be restoring the floorboards by filling, sanding and sealing them, removing wall tiles and plastering and patching the walls ready for painting, remove the cornices from the ceiling so the new ceiling can go up. No sleep in for me this weekend!

Dear Big Bro - When you offer to come over and help us renovate that doesn't mean asking every hour if it's beer o'clock yet and just generally being a distraction so we don't get any work done! You must earn your beers boy!!

Dear 3 Year Blog-versary - What a milestone I crossed this week to be writing on this blog for 3 years now ... 520+ posts later and I'm loving my place in blogland more and more each day. Thanks for all your support my awesome readers xx

Harvest Box Review And A Giveaway

Let's kick off the week with a tasty Giveaway peeps!

This fun Harvest Box landed in my mailbox last week and I couldn't wait to see what treats they had packed for me.

I was a little worried as the box got wet from the rain but thankfully they were packaged well and my snacks didn't get soggy they were safe and dry.

So how does Harvest Box work?

You rate what you would like to try and Harvest Box will select 4 portions out of their 50+ mixes of nuts, dried fruits, seeds and snacks.

Select your delivery days and then wait for your tasty lucky dip parcel to arrive. It will be mailed to your home or office anywhere in Australia for $7.95.

If it will stop me from raiding the biscuit jar at work or the chocolates at home it is well worth the money!

In my box were 2 nut mixes.

HoneyBGood cashews coated in honey and sesame seeds and really sweet, a bit chewy and a delicious one for the sweet tooth's and Hola Hola a spicy mix of cashews in chili and lime, crunchy bbq corn and peas - this was a really tasty mix and my favourite.

Hola Hola mix
The other 2 mixes were fruit, nuts, seeds and chocolate buttons.

The Kokoda Trail was a super seed mix of dried fruit, nuts and seeds and also a nice surprise of few chocolate buttons thrown in. Mont Blanc was similar from the dried fruit range and had fruit and white chocolate buttons.

These were a bit of a naughty but nice mix feeling healthy for eating the fruits and nuts until bam a sweet chocolate slips in there too!

Kokoda Trail Mix

I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty these snacks were because let's be honest when I think healthy I also think plain and tasteless but these little packages were far from boring.

The Hola Hola mix created a little party in my mouth I know where the name comes from now ... Hola Hola!

In terms of value, at $7.95 per box including delivery to you I think they are good value for money.

Yes they're more expensive than mixing up your own fruit and nuts from the supermarket but seriously, who has time for that - not me!

A big bag of nuts can get pretty boring but these are far from that with interesting mixes and combinations. The value comes from it being delivered to you and the element of surprise and trying something different.

Harvest Box are giving a free box away to one of my lucky readers! For your chance to receive a Harvest Box delivered right to your door and packed full of tasty snacks all you need to do is:

1)  Follow Jarrah Jungle here or on BlogLovin here

Holiday For A Cause - Family

I didn't think I would be heading overseas for a holiday this year because of the work we want to do around the house with the Kitchen Renovation and Courtyard.

Except that my Nanna who is my only remaining grandparent has been asking me for almost 5 years now when we can go on another cruise together and I knew that I needed to put some time aside to make her wishes come true while she is still able to travel.

My gorgeous Nanna

My Nanna and I, my parents, and my Aunt and Uncle (my Dad's brother) went on a family cruise for my Nanna's 80th Birthday on board the Sun Princess in 2007.

We had 3 cabins that were right next door to one another and I shared with my Nanna ... the first thing she said to me when we got inside was "What happens in the cabin stays in the cabin" and after that hysterical laughter I knew we were going to have a very entertaining few weeks!

My Nanna and I sharing a cabin pondering the tough decisions ... What should I wear tonight?!

We did a 16 day cruise around Australia from Sydney to Fremantle.

On my Nanna's Birthday we arrived in Cairns and I had organised for a limousine to pick us up from the port and tour us around the city .... there it was waiting stocked full of cans of bourbon for the men and bubbly for us ladies and we were driven around town in style.

Surprise we hired a limo!
From Left to Right - Aunt, Uncle, Nanna, Dad, Mum and Me

I was a little worried at first, being a 27 year old single girl, how I would go sharing with my Nanna who lives in the country so I only see a few times a year.

But we had a bloody fantastic time together she was actually a pretty good wing man pointing out the cute bartenders and then chatting to them and cheekily pointing in my direction - yes it was embarrassing but she did get me lots of attention! It really was a treasured time for all of us and I know those memories will last for many more years to come.

My wing man can spot a handsome young feller from a mile away

And now we are going to do it again ... taking my Nanna on a cruise aboard one of the worlds biggest ships the Voyager of the Seas. We were a bit worried about the size of the ship being too big but I think we will manage ok after all what's the rush when you're on holidays!

This time we are going with my parents, Mr P and I (this will be our second cruise together) and my Nanna is sharing with a friend of my Mum's who is also in her 80s.

Things will probably move a bit slower this time and that's fine. The main thing is that my Nanna goes on this cruise holiday and eats all the delicious food, experiences the fine service and entertainment, enjoys travelling out of Australia through New Caledonia, Fiji and New Zealand and that we all have a happy healthy fun time.
