Nursery Design - Working With What We Have

With Mr P and I expecting a new addition in the Jarrah Jungle home I've been busy planning our baby's room in my head for months and months and now we're ready to actually start setting up the nursery for our sweet little girl due in May.

I don't want to spend a fortune on the nursery and have given myself a $700 budget for all the furniture and decor. I'll mostly be using furniture we already have and need to get just a few other things and then make them all work together so everything looks like it was meant to be together and not the mix matched collection of furniture that it is!

Working With What We Have

I have an Ikea cube bookcase in dark wood which needs to stay in the nursery (which use to be my study/craft room) as there's nowhere else to put it in the house and I also need to keep my books on the shelves.

But I'll clear some shelves and make it more baby friendly by adding cute ornaments and baby books. Just recently I had a big clear out and donated a heap of books to charity but I'll be doing another purge to make room for some baby books as I'd love for our little one to be as addicted to books as I am.

Excuse this old photo but it's the only neat and tidy one I have as I've accumulated so many books in the last 5 years since purchasing this bookcase it's overflowing!

When I found out we're having a girl I knew a wardrobe was a must to hang all her pretty dresses and coats - already our little one has a better wardrobe of outfits than me!

I have an Ikea wardrobe which was in the Guest Bedroom and was storing our winter coats and travelling gear which I have managed to squash into our Master Bedroom wardrobe so I can move this wardrobe into the nursery.

I plan to add a few shelves in the wardrobe to store baskets and boxes so I can organise all the baby's things like linen and nappies and anything else baby related I can fit in here!

We have been given a beautiful timber cot which has been in Mr P's family for many years and I love the sentimental thought that it's been passed down through the family.

Unfortunately the timber doesn't match the other white and dark wood furniture so Mr P is going to paint the cot white so it matches in with the other furniture in the room.

Our only purchase so far is the Ikea Hemnes chest of drawers which I've had my heart set on for ages and managed to buy on Gumtree brand new and still in it's original packaging for a bargain $320 (its RRP is $449).

I did my research and read a lot of reviews before settling on these drawers which will double as drawers for the baby's clothes and also as a change table by placing a change mat on top. I don't have space for a separate change table and don't want to spend money on something I may only use for a short time so felt the drawers were a better long term investment.

These drawers are the perfect height for Mr P and I and I can put the change mat on one side so I can stand on the end of the drawers to change the baby (as changing side on may be difficult), and it's long enough to have the changing supplies and nappies on top at hands reach.

My other purchase will be a nursing chair but I'm still undecided whether to get a proper nursing chair like a glider (a chair and footstool that moves back and forth), or a rocking chair, or if a really comfortable big armchair with a high back would be better as it could be moved to another room when it's not needed in the nursery anymore.

What type of chair would you have in a nursery?

I'm trying to be practical in my choices and get pieces that can be used later for other purposes rather than for just a short time in the nursery.

I'm also shopping from home for items we already have that will look good in this room like the rug, light fitting, art and wall decor.

I'm slowing chipping away doing a little project here and there and hope to have the room ready in the next few weeks so I can really start 'nesting' as they call it!

What are your must haves for a Nursery?

Cherie Barber Renovating For Profit - Seminar Review

A few Saturdays ago a lovely friend who shares in my passion for property invited me to a free seminar on renovating.

Needless to say I jumped at the chance and we signed up for Renovating Run Down Real Estate For Profit which is held in every State of Australia every few months and is presented by Australia's renovating queen Cherie Barber and hosted by Stuart Zadel.

Cherie Barber known as Australia's renovating queen

You know with these "free" seminars they're going to try to sell you something - at this one they're selling a $6000 package which includes a 3 day workshop in Sydney, all the paperwork, templates, contracts, etc you will need to start your own renovating for profit venture. Personally, I thought it was too expensive but if you are serious about renovating for profit and unsure where to start, then this will help you in the process.

Project managing my own home renovation over the last few years has given me a lot of insight into how the process of renovating works, organising trades, what order to do the jobs in, and I have created my own documents along the way to help. Although some of the templates and contracts in the package would be useful, I know that I can do my own research and find most of the information I need online ... for free!

Regardless of the package that they were selling - all the information shared on the day was brilliant.

Cherie is smart, approachable and open with her knowledge and understanding of the property market. She shared lots of examples of her before and after renovations, how to keep the budget down, cosmetic updates Vs structural changes, and looking after your tradies to build up a team to help you do the work.

Let's face it, the Australian property market has already boomed and now it's a lot harder to find a do-er-upper home, in the perfect location, for the right price. But there is still money to be made in real estate and this seminar gives you lots of hints and tips in getting your foot in the door to give it a go.

I was really impressed and inspired by the seminar and it's driven me to consider the idea of renovating for profit as a serious business venture. Since doing my own home renovations and the passion and interest I have in the process (as you know I started this blog to document my own home renovations!) I'm contemplating having a go at project managing another renovation .... who knows I could be doing it for a career in years to come just like Cherie!

We were given a book The New Way To Make Money In Property Fast by Stuart Zadel who hosted the event - you can get a free copy here. I've read the book cover to cover and while my eyes glazed over in some parts about taxes and things I didn't understand, it has some really good chapters by property experts about the different ways you can make money from property - everything from the stock market to property development which I found really useful.

The Renovating Run Down Real Estate For Profit seminar was really inspiring and motivating and if you're interested in renovating homes not to live in yourself styled perfectly to your tastes, but to renovate for a profit to rent out or sell and step into the property market then I really recommend you sign up for this seminar.

Hey it's free, you've got nothing to lose except for a few hours of your time!

The next Renovating For Profit seminars are in October 2014 - you can check out the dates here

Stuart Zadel also hosts other property and investment events which you can find here

Have you been to one of Cherie Barber's seminars before? What did you think?

Sydney: A Few Snaps and Stories

I'm back from my short trip to Sydney where I went for a work conference this week.

I was back in the office today and back into work mode which was a bit of a struggle because although it's only interstate the 5 hour flight home last night and 3 hour time difference does take it out of me!

This is my third year attending the conference and I feel this is the best one yet, I've come away learning heaps and my brain is filled to the brim with information and ideas to put into action.

The conference venue was at The Powerhouse Museum which had some great exhibits on Australian Designers and The Beatles in Australia which we could check out for free (on the breaks of course!)

At the function dinner there was a special guest speaker Malcolm Page who is an Australian sailor and shared his story about Olympic success and I got to feel the weight of his medals in my hands that he won in the Beijing and London games.

I stayed at the Novotel Rockford in Darling Harbour and after getting the airport shuttle bus to the wrong hotel (there are 3 Novotels in Darling Harbour so confusing and embarrassing!) I finally managed to find the right one where a big king bed was waiting for me.

There's nothing like having a nice relaxing bubble bath and ordering room service at any time of the day or night for comfort away from home!

I stayed near Paddy's Markets and managed a quick look around at the market stalls and did a bit of early Christmas shopping which I'm sure they'll love when they find out I bought their gifts in Sydney.

Unfortunately I didn't get time to get out of the City and visit any of the homewares stores on my list.

But I'm back in Sydney next month for my family cruise holiday so I might have more time then. The only other shopping I did was at the airport ... that's a bit sad isn't it!

Staying in Darling Harbour is always a buzz with people watching and things to see and do.

A trip to Sydney is not complete without a walk around Circular Quay with the Opera House and views of the Harbour Bridge.

The weather was perfectly sunny and warm and a nice change from the rain and cooler days we've been having in Perth.

Spring is such a great time to travel.

I will be back next month Sydney .... stay sunny until then!

How was your week? What have you been up to?

A Confession From A Magazine Addict

Hello world, my name's Michelle and I'm a magazine addict ... there I've said it step one is admitting I have a problem! But times they are a changing and I've accepted I have an obsession with glossy shiny magazines and it's time to cull the collection.

Over the last 4 years I've subscribed to Real Living, Australian House and Garden, Delicious and Super Food Ideas .... now if you multiply that by 12 months in a year you have yourself a stack of almost 50 magazines a year ... that's a lot of reading and I hate to admit it but a bit of time wasting as well.

To me there's nothing more exciting than getting a fresh crisp new magazine in the mail box ... I love the way they look with their beautiful bright colours and smooth glossy pages. At this moment I subscribe to two magazines Real Living is my go to bible for home inspiration and I cashed in my Flyby points for a years subscription to Super Food Ideas which have really simple and easy recipe ideas.

With the steady flow of magazines coming into the home each month and my 6 magazine holders full, 2 huge drawers in the coffee table filled to the brim and now a secret stash building up in the study it's time for me to part with my much loved magazines. See that's my problem, after I've read them I can't get rid of them .... Well until now that is.

So I've been going through the food magazines and tearing out recipes I want to try and after I've tried the recipe if I like it and i'll make it again I write it into my recipe book. I now have a stack of 2 years worth of food magazines to pass onto friends.

The home magazines are so much harder to part with because they have so many pictures I like, interesting articles, how tos, they are like my inspiration bible. But to beat this addiction now when the magazines are about 6 months old I can finally bring myself to tear out pages I like and put them into my lever arch inspiration files - I have 4 files full of magazine pages, brochures, paint charts etc with inside and outside ideas that I can refer back to.

I'm proud to say I'm slowly getting through my magazine hoarding and culling the collection. Keeping what I like and then passing them onto friends ... I know they are going to be in good hands and it's one less thing collecting dust piled high in the corner of the study!

What's your favourite magazine you just can't resist?

Voting is closing in just a few days on 30 April 2013 for the People's Choice round for the Australian Best Blogs Competition - I'd be forever grateful if you headed over here and voted for Jarrah Jungle on page 2 names are listed alphabetically.

This week the 25 Finalists were named over 5 categories you can check them out here. These finalist blogs have very talented writing styles and quality content I can see why they were selected by the Judges.

Of the Lifestyle/Hobby finalists named most of the blogs are about food and travel, none were renovating and decorating blogs which I was really quite surprised about.

Blogging Your Way Ecourse Blog Boss - Course Review

Over the past 4 weeks I have taken you through what I've been learning on the Blog Boss online course with Blogging Your Way Ecourse guru Holly Becker. Now here is my final recap of the course in case anyone is interested in taking one in the future to see if it would suit you. You can see all the Blogging Your Way Ecourses here.

I have learnt so much about blogging in the past month. Sure there's lots of information out there on the web and in books about how to do things to your blog but this course was fun, interactive and engaging. It made me want to learn.

Lessons are done via a blog post on a certain topic. There are about 10 blog posts a week on different topics as well as 1-2 podcasts to watch. What I found really useful was converting the posts to a PDF to print out and keep which I've done for the topics I want to refer back to.

There is homework each week and you are given the entire week to complete it and then post to a forum for other students to see. The idea is that you can interact on the forum with other students and with the teachers as well to help each other out and ask questions etc.

I won't lie this course for the last 4 weeks has been pretty full on with a lot of content to read and absorb. But it was manageable as you didn't have to read the posts on the day, I tended to save them up and read through a few in one day making notes and printing what I needed to.

The teachers are clever and fun which has kept me engaged the whole way through. They range from the lovely Holly herself of Decor8 a decorating blog, Irene of Bloesm a design blog and Steffi of Ohhhmhhh a food and design blog.

I really found this was one of a kind information that is so relevant to those of us in the blogging world. We understand each other and it seems to have been a bit of a taboo and unspoken language about how we set up and run our blogs like they are a business - it was such a release to read and learn about how to be our own blog boss.

At the end of this course I am feeling really driven and enthusiastic to learn and put into practice the ideas and tools I've been given. In fact I've already spent hours making changes and taking onboard what I've learnt - hopefully my lovely readers can see the changes I've made to make it easier for you to navigate around my blog space!

I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to take their blog to the next level and learn things from how to make your blog look more appealing to how to approach a business for sponsorships. For more information on what the course covers check out my week by week reviews below.

The course fee is $129 USD and includes 4 weeks of the online course plus access to the forum for 4 weeks after the course ends. I felt the course offered great value for money taking into consideration the teachers time and efforts on lessons and course content.

Friday's Letters - Dear April

I'm linking up my Friday's Letters over at the lovely The Sweet Season today why don't you head on over here and link up some letters too.

I'm imagining this weeks letters are written from this relaxed spot right on the beach front ... I don't think I would get much writing done with that gorgeous view.

Dear April - Last month was so crazy busy with family Birthdays and study taking up all of my time. April you can just cruise on in and stay a while please.

Dear Lexi - Week 12 and you've been a little under the weather this week poor lil pooch. My home made mix of tea tree oil and water hopefully helps sooth your skin. Feel better soon.

Dear Decor8 ecourse - After 4 weeks of study I've finished the BYW course and man do I feel invigorated to chase my dreams and turn them into reality. Watch this space!

Dear Blog - I've spent hours making changes to the layout, my bio, about me and contact pages and adding new page tabs for a House Tour, Entertaining, Craft, Travels and BooksI'd love some feedback from my lovely readers - what do you think of the new look?

Dear 30th Birthday Party - Karaoke, jukebox and slushy machine some of the things on the menu tonight for a friend's 30th Birthday party. I'm putting my dancing shoes on!

Dear Wedding - I don't know how a bride gets ready for a wedding because I spend weeks planning my outfit, the present, etc and I'm just the guest! I still have nothing to wear tomorrow to my friend's wedding .... Oh well all eyes will be on the bride anyway!

Easter Weekend Happenings

Is it just me or did Easter really sneak up on us coming early in March this year ...

It was so good to have a 4 day break. We didn't go away we spent the time around home but managed to have equal parts relaxing and doing things which is always a good feeling.

Drove around visiting friends and family for Easter catch ups and a house warming party. Handed out mountains of chocolate eggs, bunnys, humpty dumpty and treats.

Ate too much chocolate and drank too much wine. Made a delicious fish and prawn curry on Good Friday from fish caught by my big brother ... it's quite a step up from the fillet-o-fish burger I use to get from McDonalds on Good Friday!

Took Lexi to the park she splashed around in the River and got all muddy. She loves playing with other dogs she's a bit of a tramp really! We've had her for 3 months now she has really settled into our home so well and is much loved and spoilt.

I read some of my home design books getting inspired about the kitchen renovation. Lazed about on the couch watching Foxtel and my favourite Lifestyle shows and getting my dose of house envy. I pretty much watched Sarah 101 reruns all afternoon she has such an engaging personality and is so damn talented I have a major girl crush on her!

Finished the last of my lessons for the BYW Blog Boss course and have made lots of notes and goals I want to achieve in the coming months. I spent hours updating my blog by added some new tabs to my top header to make it easier to find things.

Got a few jobs done around the house like cleaning out the garage and getting it ready to be turned into the makeshift kitchen while we're renovating. Also installed a new dishwasher at my apartment to keep the tenants happy.

So that was our Easter break!
How was yours? What did you get up to?

Blogging Your Way Ecourse - Blog Boss Week 4

Sadly this is the fourth and final week of the BYW Blog Boss ecourse.

Now there wasn't much pressure on us for our last week of Homework oh no pretty easy really we just had to be AMAZING! This be amazing homework was the hardest one of all because I have no excuse, this course has given me the ideas and the tools to make the changes to be my own blog boss - but it was figuring out what I really want to do and putting in the time and effort to make it happen.

After reading through my Week 1 wishlist and figuring out what wasn't really working on my blog and what was. Then I looked through Week 2 and recalled blogs that rocked and why to see what it was about their blogs that I was drawn to and could incorporate (not copy!) into my own. For Week 3 I put my dreamers hat on and made a list of what my ultimate dream blog would look like. So here we are for Week 4 it was time to review those 3 areas and start to make some changes and turn the dream into reality.

In other lessons during the week we touched upon how to use Pinterest better (you can find me here) and copyright laws to make sure you do the right thing and give credit where it's due.

Put all your talents and links together in the one place so people don't have to be detectives to find you (have you ever Googled yourself? It's interesting what comes up!). The other important point was to put it out there and say what you want - your ultimate goal or lifelong dream as you never know who will be reading. I work in a corporate world and keep my working life quite separate and private but now I'm tempted to share some of my talents because I should be proud of them and what I've accomplished, both on my blog and in my work life.

Admiring others work but not being envious or jealous of their success and definitely not copying others hard work. Apparently us female of the species have a tendency to turn into the green eyed monster if there is a blogger who we like we get jealous and want what they have instead of admiring their work and trying to learn from them - befriending them is a much more productive way to go.

The common theme with these lessons and each week has been to:
build up our confidence
be positive
believe in our dreams
and do what makes us happy

Sounds simple really but the impact on myself and the 700+ students throughout this course has been incredible I can tell you!

This course has made me want what I have been dreaming and gushing and talking about for a few years now. I don't know why I've been so hesitant about voicing how much I want to make blogging my career but not anymore - it's out in the open for all to know! My friends and family already know how much I love my blog and how passionate I am about what I write, I gush about it every time I see them and they are so supportive and ask how it's going and show interest in what I'm doing. It's important to have the support of your friends and family that's for sure.

I feel I'm at a real turning point now and I'm going to start taking action and TURNING MY CAN'TS INTO CANS AND DREAMS INTO PLANS!

So I have my printed out sheets of the lessons to read through, my hand written notes and of course my blog itself to analyse and critique. I have written out my blog goals for 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. This includes small things like what posts topics I want to focus on more to larger goals like the number of sponsorship posts I would like to do in the future.

You will start to see small changes in my blog space over the coming weeks and months ... stay tuned my friends!

Blogging Your Way E Course - Blog Boss Week 3

I'm now over the half way point of the Blog Boss course and into Week 3.

The homework for this week was to dream big and express how we want our dream blog to look and feel. Some clever bloggers in class did digital mood boards where as mine was a big long list in boring ole bullet point form. I really want to get more tech savvy and learn more graphic design and photo programs to create digital mood boards etc - what graphic/mood board/photo programs do you use ?

There were some sessions on organising ideas and I've now started an ideas notebook that I keep at home for all my post ideas, no matter how big or small I jot them down so I don't forget about them and can stay organised. I'm constantly thinking of different blog posts when I'm out shopping, or in the shower, or sitting at my desk at work so I find this tip really useful!

There was a bit of business discussion about earning money through blogging with advertising and products and services. This is something I'm going to spend some time researching as I would really like to venture into this. I don't think it's something I want to rush into, I need to get my blog looking how I want it to and will then approach some businesses (some have already approached me!) and see if we can work together.

Lessons on how to approach a business I found really helpful as I want to start doing this with the big renovations I'm tackling like my kitchen renovation. It's easy to send an email but to walk into a shop with a proposal I know I'm going to get all hot and flushed and nervous about what to say! I've made lots of notes about this lesson which I'll be putting into practice in the next few weeks. I have a bit of analysing to do, critiquing and basically learning to be the editor in chief of my blog.

What I love about this course is a lot of emphasis is put on being happy and doing the things that you love which just reinstates to me time and time again that I absolutely love blogging, I love to write and interact with all the lovely readers out there, meet inspiring bloggers and drool over their lovely blogs and spaces. You guys are awesome you make me feel so happy and content when you comment and read my blog and likewise I get so much joy reading about what is happening in your space in the world. I smile at the computer screen like an idiot - thank god you can't see me!

Fridays Letters - Dear Mum's 60th Birthday

I missed last Friday's Letters but I'm back into it again this week and sharing over at The Sweet Season why don't you head on over here and link up some letters too.

I'm imagining this weeks letters are written from this old school writing desk with its awesome wall art.

Dear Mum's 60th Birthday - You are the most beautiful Mum in the world your heart shines with kindness inside and out and you light up the room with your smile. I can't wait to spend the entire weekend with you celebrating with Birthday shenanigans!

Dear Big Bro's Birthday - Don't worry I haven't forgotten you either, I'll still have more than a few cheers with you too bro!

Dear Rottnest - I haven't been to Perth's favourite little island for years what a great place to spend a Birthday weekend.
