I had a bit of a panic attack on the weekend when I went to upload some photos into a post and was told I had reached my free storage limit in Picasa and it wouldn't let me upload any more photos.
I deleted some photos from my Picasa albums to try to clear some space and even after deleting about 50 photos it still didn't budge from the 99% full mark.
I also stupidly deleted my profile picture which I was devastated about and no matter how many times I tried I couldn't upload another one from Photobucket or Picasa. I also noticed a lot of my photos on my blog had been replaced by a big black box with a line through it which I managed to fix over 2 strong coffees by changing all my photo albums to public. Phew!
The only option I seemed to have was to buy extra storage from Google storage at $2.49USD a month for 25 GB - so that's what I've done and it was simple enough to do online and the changes to my Picasa storage came through within a few minutes.
But I'm still peeved about it - I would have thought that in this big wide web world that Blogger would remain free and thus blogging would remain free and it really blows that I'm going to be up for a charge each month due to the photo album storage. A blog needs photos - it would be pretty boring to just read all these words you need the photos to help tell the tale. So scarily enough the photos and size limit in the albums is only going to grow as my blog grows and I continue to post.
So I have some questions for my lovely readers -
Have you reached the storage limit before? If so what did you do?
I was also toying with the idea of moving my blog across to Wordpress as I've read lots of good things about it and that it can do a lot more things than Blogger -
Have you moved to Wordpress? What do you think?
I really love my blog I've grown to rely on it as my creative outlet and it makes me so happy to share my goings on and I'd be absolutely devastated if I couldn't continue to post and share photos as I have been for these past few years.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Ah I reached my limit and started paying for storage. I hated it too! But I am scared of the transfer! I'd love to hear what you find out about making the switch!
ReplyDeleteHow horrible for you. I don't actually use Picasa - I just store all my photos on my own hard drive (and backed up onto data sticks). That way I know I can always fix/find a photo. I'm a little suspicious of having everything in the cloud - call me paranoid but I also back up my blog posts in word dox (without the pics).
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'll be going to Wordpress - I understand it is supposed to be better in some ways but I just like the look of my simple Blogger template...
Have a good week.
You don't *think* you store your photos in Picasa, but every Blogger blog does. That's how our blog posts can come back and find them. I didn't even know it was happening until I reached my storage limit as well...
DeleteI use photobucket and I don't have to pay.
ReplyDeleteWhen I add an image to a post I add it via link from there.
Good luck! x
I reached my photo storage limit last year and I decided to go ahead and pay for additional space. I was a bit freaked at the time but now I wonder why - nothing has changed! Last year the plans were different though and I'm on one which is only $5 a year which is nothing really - but I do understand that paying half that for only a month is nowhere near as good. I'm not tempted by Wordpress at present, I like my Blogger blog :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't had storage issues yet and have always been happy with Blogger for my simple blogging needs :)
ReplyDeleteI use Wordpress for my blog but I store all my photos on photobucket and I've never gone over my free limit. I have 2GB of storage and I'm currently sitting on 11% with 250 images (past 3-4 years). Before that, I had another photobucket account & another before that :P All free! x
ReplyDeleteI also had a panic attack (i love my blog!) So I am paying my little fee, but not happy about it. xo
ReplyDeleteI've had no problem with mine either. I use photo bucket and Flickr.
ReplyDeleteI guess if you need to pay for additional space, that could work. I hope you get it solved asap!
Thank you all so very much for your advice I really appreciate it :)
ReplyDeleteI have thousands of photos and have not reached my limit. Images don't need to be big for blogs - 800 pixels is plenty, so resize the images, save them for web (which reduces the file size but not the picture size) and you'd need many years to use up the free storage. I've been blogging since 2005 (or 2004?) and have images from 13 blogs. A lot of images because I'm a photographer.
ReplyDeleteTo save an image for web use (if you don't use photoshop), get Irfanview free. They have a function that will "save for web".
I had to purchase more storage space as well. I got nervous when that message first appeared, but I haven't had any problems with Blogger since. Hope your blogging experience continues to be pleasant.
ReplyDeleteI use Flickr and pay $25 or so a year. It gives me unlimited storage, so I could use it as remote backup for all my photos (but I don't). I add my images to my blog posts using HTML code - apparently this makes the images crisper. For some reason paying once yearly doesn't seem to bother me, but if it was every month it would irk me, even though the cost might be the same.
ReplyDeletehmmm I really don't want to pay........I wanted to preserve it all for my kids to look at a laugh about in the future. I'm happy to go back and resize all the previous photos but not sure how to do it?
