Book Club: Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James

September's Book Club read was the popular Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James

I really didn't want to read this book because EVERYONE else was and I don't like being one of the crowd! But when it was picked as a Book Club read I didn't have a choice.
This book is about 21 year old Anastasia Steele who meets the older handsomely rich Christian Grey and they start a roller coaster relationship. Ana is a clumsy never been drunk or kissed student who has good looking guy friends falling over her but yet she has never liked anyone until she met Christian. This alone makes this story totally unbelievable but that's why it's called fiction!
I found the writing style of this book pretty terrible, it was like it was written by a teenager. Words and phrases were repeated a lot which was annoying. I did like the cheeky and flirty emails between Ana and Christian. I'm surprised it is written by a woman and think a man had a bit of input.
So what was all the fuss about? Well I would call this book romantic/erotic yes there's lots of (unbelievable no woman has an orgasm every time) sex but it has a bit of romance as well (if your feminist doesn't mind a man buying you expensive things). A lot of their relations are just plain unbelievable considering young Ana is an unkissed virgin before she meets experienced Christian, but for the most of it Christian really seems to enjoy what he's doing and I think that's what makes this so popular with women that he is a man that wants to please his woman. I know this has halved opinions - some woman hate men like this and some love it - and that's why all woman are different after all.
I enjoyed the story and may be sucked in to read the other 2 in the trilogy. I don't know what all the fuss was about and if anything it made me have higher expectations of the book than if it was by an unknown author. It certainly made for some colourful discussions at my  Book Club helped along by a few bottles of champagne at Duchess (they even invited us to come back again!)

I would recommend this book to 18+ audience - woman for a smile and men for some tips in the bedroom! I give this book 4 stars.

  1. That 4 stars is out of 5 right? :) I loved the flirtatious email as well. It was actually my MOST FAVORITE part. :)

  2. Yes 4 out of 5 - Id pass up a pack of tim tams for this read!

  3. I think I'm one of the only woman left who hasn't read this!

At least there's plenty of people to borrow the book from when I do want to!

  4. I read it and really liked it. Yes, it was horribly written, but makes for a fun read while on a stinky vacay, ya know? Now, I could not even get past chapter 9 in the 2nd one...ugh, so slow..

This talk about this book, though?? UGH! It is making me crazy. Do people think that this is the first dirty book ever written? Maybe they should check the shelves in their local bookstore and/or library. It's not. I get that these vanilla, boring folk may have NO spice at all in the bedroom...but ya know. It is just a fun book to read. Who cares that it is filled with pages of sex? It's a book. A book. And the cover isn't like those old Harlequin books with the guy all over the girl in distress. It's a tie. A tie. It's not giving anything away to those that don't get it. So walk past it and MOVE ON.

  5. Nah. Not for me. I still baulk at joining the crowd. Mind you, i said that for Twilight and am now a complete Twihard.

  6. Michelle, it's not my sort of thing - one of the very few books I started and gave up on - but I know lots of people loved it. Have a great week.

  7. I haven't read it and am not planning to. :)
